Are we talking family (G rated) road trips or "buddy" (X-rated) road trips? Hard to pick a favorite as they're all great. My next one is next weekend for a couple days on VIR's full courseLoki wrote:Waaaay back me and my dad drove from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Vegas for the week. I hardly remember anything from it and I don't have any pictures =/ Biggest road trip I've taken though.
Thought it would be easier to reach you here...nissangirl74 @ I LEARNED'D something today! wrote:I have taken several VERY long road trips. My dad and i used to take off and drive all over the country. I'm pretty sure I can help you out. What would you like to know?
One thing I'd mention is getting a AAA membership. Even if you can't imagine the thought of someone else bailing you out a of a mechanical jam its worth it just for the discounts at hotels & restaurants. With the popularity of GPS nav, its not such a big deal anymore, but AAA has also had the best & most up to date maps available as well, and the guidebooks are a nice thing to have if you plan a trip but don't actually have every minute of your time booked.rcabrita wrote:Thought it would be easier to reach you here...
Well my basic worries are what I am getting into.
I am looking for:TipsTricksMust-havesThings most people don't think about etc...
Here is a website that has a TON of good information on ithttp://www.roadtripamerica.com...g.htmand here is my two cents to go along with it.rcabrita wrote:I am looking for:TipsTricksMust-havesThings most people don't think about etc...
I probably won't take an atlas, but AAA seems to be a no brainer.BusyBadger wrote:One thing I'd mention is getting a AAA membership. Your not kidding. I started planning meals bathroom breaks etc into our trip...It seems like we are going to stop for food about 8-10 times on the road. That definitely adds up.nissangirl74 wrote:Plan as much of your trip ahead of time as possible. Research all of the places you want to visit. Visit mapquest for directions, use GPS if you want, but also make sure that you take a road atlas. Great for showing alternate routes if you want to get off the interstate for a while and see some scenery.
One of the easiest ways to save $$, is to pack a cooler full of food to take with you. I'm not saying you have to eat while you drive, that's what rest areas are for, but buying every meal on the road is crazy expensive.
Wow never thought of the whole 2 keys thing...Durring out trip we are going to need 2 oil changesnissangirl74 wrote:Some things that are a given. Maintenance your vehicle before you leave.New tires are a plus.Make sure you have a spare, jumper cables, and some basic tools.Make sure both of you has a key to the car. (Don't laugh, it's happened)
Well we are renting a car so it is definitly going to be FI, but just the fact that you know that puts a smile to my face. Greg is one lucky...nissangirl74 wrote:I can't remember what kind of car you said you were driving but if it is carbeurated instead of fuel injected, you might have to make some adjustments while crossing the Rockies. (Don't laugh at this either. With the drastic altitude changes, sometimes it's necessary in order to get your car over the mountains.)
I will look into AAA...nissangirl74 wrote:AAA is definitely is a good idea. You get crazy discounts on hotels, restaurants, local attractions, and information on free stuff. Also, it is so nice to have them on call if you have a big emergency.

Oh God. I've done drives that far solo and loved it. Not sure how I would fair with a 13 year old girl. That would get annoying fast.nissangirl74 wrote:In May, Greg and i will be making the trek from TN to AZ to take me home. Our passengers will include my 13 year old daughter, her cat, and her hamster. There is NO way we will be able to drive 1900 miles without some epics adventures, so we will post details and pics when we arrive.
