No one call me stupid or anything...but if I was to get a Skyline from Jap. How would I be able to drive it around here in the US???I know I could get away with it in my home town cuz there is no rules in my town and the cops are stupid.....but what all would you have to do to get insurence and get it tagged n ****? Like I said...Don't call me stupid...it's just a Q?

Not calling you stupid, but ehh.. By the sound of your post it doesn't seem like you could afford a LEGALIZED skyline anyway. See how I mentioned LEGAL, meaning its legal to drive.. You can't just buy a car from another country and cruise around whether it be lhd or rhd etc blah blah blah.. It takes quite a bit of work and more importantly money. Granted it varies from model to model, but even so if you only want it as an 'off road' vehicle getting a true import into the country is going to take quite a bit of work & $.

I'm going to take a quick stab here and guess that you're 17.. Moral of the story; if you know its a stupid question - dont ask it.

OK guy.. Tell him exactly how to do it then. If it were that simple there probably wouldn't be companies out there doing it, no? I gave him a reasonable response. Importing a car, let alone a skyline is going to take lots of time and lots of money.. Whats so complicated about that? I sure as hell don't know how EXACTLY to do it, but I realize the general outlines of what and why certain things need to be done. If importation of non-US spec cars was easy, Motorex and RBMotoring wouldnt get the big bucks for doing it. I've personally got to hear about the "hoops" Motorex has to jump through to get their Skylines imported here. If you want Japanese spec cars here, try voting people into political office that think like we do and who will beat the D.O.T and E.P.A into submission.

The hardest part about buying a japanese car is getting it through customs....that and the rest of it costs a lot of money upwards of $20k just to get it into the states, and then however much more to modify it to get ti legalized.

matt you really want an easy solution. i have an email addy for you. email this guy with any question you have on importing a skyline. he imports them and is a very good guy. he was gonna try and help em import a silvia chassis but is unable to find one to be crash tested. heres his email

RHD: isnt the problem RHD isnt per se illegal in the USA.

However a Skyline JDM car needs a lot of mods to bring it EPA/DOT compliant, this will run between 15-20 k depending on the company.

I can imagine someone registering a R32 as a S13, but that is highly illegal, though the chances of getting caught are slim in some states.

There is a cottage industry in place that legalizez JDM cars especially Skylines for good $$.

The Skyline forum also has posts on this subject of legalization.

Aight...sorry for the duoble post...my computer is slow and I din't think it was sending through...Like I said would I be able to Tear the badging off of my 240 so if i was to get my tags ran or something he would look at the rear end of the car and see 240sx and he would think that's what it is?? this would aslo involve moving VIN tags.If you keep a low profile, chances of getting caught are slim to none, in some states, it >is< however a felony if caught.

Especially if your car becomes a local well-known car, just one guy that lost a race has to do is call DMV.

Assuming you don't know how to smuggle a car into the US, if you don't fill out the proper paperwork, US Customs agents will seize that thing even before it hits the shore.
