At McDain's Restaurant, in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, kids don't eat free. And starting next week, they don't get to eat at all. Mike Vuick, owner of the Pittsburgh area eatery has just announced a ban on children under 6 at his casual dining establishment.

After receiving noise complaints from customers about crying kids at neighboring tables, Vuick decided to institute the policy, which will go into effect July 16.

What do you guys think about this? Personally, I think it's OK. No one wants to listen to a screaming child during dinner, not even their parents.

i think people need to be better parents. yeah babies are gonna cry, thats why you probably shouldn't take them to dinner, but if your 3 year old is running around screaming while i'm trying to enjoy dinner, i'm not gonna be too happy about it. my parents weren't strict but they were firm and i behaved in public because i was disciplined. just seems like a lot of people who are parents, shouldn't be.

It's a parenting thing. My daughter didn't throw fits in public because she wasn't allowed to . Some things I might have been lax on but her behavior and manners weren't one of them. I distinctly remember being in Wal-mart with her one day when she was about 4 years old. There was a kid in the next aisle throwing a temper tantrum over a bag of chips. She looked at me, rolled her eyes, and said "Someone's not getting his way. He needs to shut up before he gets a spanking."

also airplanes x 1,000,000,000,000

Don't ban the children, ban the parents that let their noisy children run amok.

This^. I don't have a problem with that restaurant's policy as too many parents will not get off their tushes and deal with their children acting up for whatever reason.
It's not fair to the other diners.

As someone who used to work in a restaurant, kids suck. I guess you guys don't need me to tell you that. This has to be one of the most awesome things I have heard of a restaurant owner doing. Love it.

^ This.

Yet another reason why America is awesome... If patrons don't like the rule, they can eat elsewhere with their fidgety, screaming little monsters.

We've got four teenagers - FOUR - and when they were little, none of them ever embarrassed us in public. We could take them anywhere, knowing full well that they'd act appropriately.

I've become too much like my Dad - I have no problem telling a crappy parent that their brat kid is disrupting my meal / movie. Maybe more people SHOULD speak up and demand a certain level of civility.

When my child was too young to know better, if he cried in a restaurant, I took him outside to calm him down without disturbing others. And, yes, we never took him to any expensive, quiet, sit-down place, for the obvious reason that he was too young to know better - we, as parents, knew better!

Once he became old enough to know better, if he acted up in any (let alone a quiet sit-down one) restaurant, he was picked up and taken outside for an attitude adjustment. After one or two incidences, we never had a problem after that.

It is primarily a parental issue here. Kids will be kids and parents need to take appropriate action - if they don't believe in appropriate attitude adjustments, then they can take the kid outside or wherever only that parent is being disturbed by the acting up - planes are a bit tougher, of course.

I am not totally in agreement with the restaurant owner's actions, since I think the better action is to put up a sign and ask any parent to take the kid out of the restaurant (because not all kids are noisy). But I can understand why he did what he did. And, yes, people do have choices so they can go to that restaurant now or not! :)

Does this ban kids as patrons or entrees?

It is a critical distinction.

Agreed, while my child is not allowed to throw temper tantrums, I don't have anything against what that guy chooses to enact in his restaurants. Now, I do think that too many parents let their kids run a muck and ignore it, and I don't think that every place should enact this to prevent America's stupidity and lack of discipline with children but I think that it's not bad for some of the more "grown up" restaurants, because unfortunately you can't fix stupid. I also don't necessarily think it's right to punish everyone with this though, I think a more proper rule would be that the restaurant has the right to eject a customer from the restaurant if their child is an obvious problem that they're not attending to.

I actually had a girl break up with me after a date one evening, due to my comments on parenting during dinner that night. There was a kid running around the restaurant uncontrollably crying, screaming, throwing things around, and their parents just ignored the child and let it continue. I told her that i'd never let my child run around like that, that's just ridiculous to let your child run around uncontrollably like that. Everything seemed fine, but then later that night she calls me late and chews me out, telling me "I acted just like when I was a child and I turned out just fine! You're tying to call my parents bad parents and they raised me just fine!". Funny that she felt so strongly about this, yet she never wanted to have kids either, and yes she was a spoiled rotten brat that did whatever she wanted, in case you didn't see that coming

I was at a restaurant a week ago, and a large family had about 4 children running around the restaurant squeaking and screaming.

Finally one of the land whales called the children over and I thought "Effin finally!".
Turns out she just wanted to feed them some crackers, which they refused, then they returned to pushing on the emergency door, wondering how to open it.

i agree completely. and this is definitely off topic, but why doesn't logic apply to smokers? why aren't restaurant owners and bar owners permitted to allow smoking in their establishments? if people don't like the smoke, go somewhere else. sorry, pet peeve of mine.

I'd happily pay extra for a movie ticket to a theater that only admits people age 21 and up. The last few movies I've been to have been nearly ruined by idiot teenagers.

As for restaurants...I rarely have issues with kids there. The last time I had a complaint about people at a restaurant it was two adults: a mid-20s couple having a loud, vehement argument in the next booth.
