Let's put ourselves into a scenario for fun.

We often butcher Nissan for not having exciting vehicle designs, but they do currently offer two fantastic sports cars.

Let's say you are hired as a driver for Nissan and you are asked to turn in your best time on the Nurburgring on one of two cars - only one and it is provided to you at no cost.

The first offering is a moderately modified version of the 2012 Nissan 370Z. It is complete with big brakes, upgraded differential (1.5 way clutch type - not viscuous) and all the necessary hardware from GTM to make around 500hp to the rear wheels with a Twin Turbo setup. Suspension has also been modified to be optimized for the 'Ring.

The second offering is a bone stock 2012 Nissan GT-R Premium.

Consider yourself to be a seasoned driver of many different types of sports cars yet a bit of a connoisseur and purist. You are NOT a professional driver.

To sweeten the deal and encourage the best performance, Nissan offers you a deal - If, on your first attempt after being acquainted with the track you are able to manage a 7:20 time or better in the car you choose, you are able to keep the car you drove. You can only pick one to drive and you should only pick the vehicle you believe is best for your driving style to ensure a win.

Which... do you choose???

for the sake of argument, and a decision based on my real life experiences, i'd have to choose the gtr. why? simple, i've never driven on a track irl, but i HAVE played gran turismo.

The GT-R would likely be quicker and more forgiving than a 370Z for someone driving an unfamiliar track due to the GT-R's computer nannies..

And this is why. I'd have to work to tame the Z to get it to do what I want as opposed to the GTR. And that that sounds like fun to me :yesnod

Plus, I love the 370z.

But the GT-R would be easier, no clutch etc would make it easier to get a good lap time.

GTR, way easier to hang out there on the edge. I'll take the "nannies" and make them work. Not a huge fan of the Z. The part about considering yourself to be someone other than yourself is a bit retarded. It's easy enough to imagine / fantasize about driving various cars, but being some one you're not doesn't make a bunch of sense. Especially since you mentioned being a purist. As a purist you'd generally shy away from any vehicle equipped with the aforementioned nannies.

Would be a better if you imagined yourself, right now, placed in this extreme set of circumstances.

In that case, if they called me up right now, GT-R. It would make up for my somewhat n00bish racing skill. I could get a good lap time and then sell the GT-R and buy a 370z :P

I'd die less and go faster in a GT-R.

You know, I need to start thinking of the GT-R like an exotic. automatically I'm like "man I wish it had a clutch..." But the Lamborghini Gallardo doesn't have a clutch, and that thing was a blast. Just need to get over the looks of the GT-R. Right now its like the nerdy kid whos actually really good at football.

It comes down to tires.

The GTR will be rolling on the OE runflats.

The Z could, and very likely would be fitted with the latest R compound offering from any of the major manufacturers.

That fact alone would likely allow it to be noticeably faster around the ring.

Plust RWD > AWD for me.

I think the initial seat time in the GTR would result in better times, but the limit of the Z is higher. With some time to get to know it, I feel it could turn a faster lap. For those of you saying it would be easy with the GTR, I have some news for you, all those electronic gadgets wont drive the car for you. It will still take a very skilled driver to set down even record matching times.
