ACTUALLY I think it would be a great idea to use leds in the cluster... If you look at Lexus they have a super white appearance and that can only be acceived (in such a small space) with LEDs. SO after some searching on that bulb site I found this...

PERFECT for gauge cluster. I just bought a set of 3 along with some other lights.
You can try it, but get ready for shadowy areas. The light in the back of the cluster is meitting from three bulbs and is being dispersed via clear plastic arms that carry it around the display. LED light tends to not travel as well. Try it though and let me know. I'm not against it, just don't want to go through all that effort only to be disappointed. I HATE pulling the cluster.

The bulbs pictured are REALLY bright.... much brighter than an incandecent equivalent, and the design of these LEDs spreads the light 360 degrees.I have them throughout my interior, and I can see a lot better than I could before....

the BMW red illuminated interior has always been my favorite. It's very soothing...just like the rain.
I was researching laptops and came across this today. Another reason why red illumination is good.

The ATG D620 has red illumination task lights for work in the dark (view large image)

Added to the ATG D620 is a task light to illuminate the keyboard at night. You can toggle these lights on and off by holding Fn + Right Arrow. Dell chose red for the lighting, which struck me as odd at first. But it makes sense because red is the color used for critical or important systems (such as emergency lighting) that operate in low-light or night-time conditions. This is because rod cells in the human eye (the type we use for night vision) do not respond to red and therefore it does not interfere in the eye's ability to focus in dim environments.
