We are thinking of removing and replacing the engine in my son's 2002 SE Pathfinder. It still runs and works but uses a quart of oil per tank of gas. (We think the precat got sucked back into the engine). We can get a junkyard engine and a guy to put it in for $1,100, total parts and labor. Of course, there is a risk that the junkyard engine may not work so well. Would any 3.5 Nissan engine work? I'm thinking 2001-2004? Has anyone done this?

PUMP the brakes!!!
Yes, it's been done. It would be best stick to an 01-02 pathy engine for your situation. Maybe you can go upto a 2003 Qx4 engine (I'm not certain), but the 03-04 pathy engine could be an adventure.

As you look for replacement engines, you might come across the letters "JDM" - Japanese Domestic Market. Those also come with a caveat: https://forums.nicoclub.com/jdm-vq35de- ... 15331.html

Benster, any follow-up on the engine swap? My dad and I are on a similar boat due to blown head gasket on his QX4. We're planning to try for a swap spring/summer. Hoping everything has gone well for you.
