My 4 year old M35 still has the original battery, and this morning failed to start.I tried jumping the car, but no luck. Radio and interior lights work, but the headlights don't so I'm hoping it is just the battery...

Since I can't jump the car, I plan on removing the battery and taking it to Autozone or Costco for a test and charge. It may take 2-3 hours until I get back home. Will removing the battery for so long erase any configuration codes in the car? Specifically, will it mess up my key FOBs or alarm and force me to visit the dealer?

This is my first time changing a battery on a M. My old G20 was so simple....

Thanks,
David

Unfortunately, no longer a Nissan or Infiniti, but continuing here at NICO!

It is highly likely that all radio settings, etc., will be lost, unfortunately.

But the door unlock fob ought to continue to work without problems. I am not 100% certain of this, but pretty confident.

If the car is in a safe location (garage?), you might want to leave it unlocked though when you go to get the new battery. :)

As an FYI, as I recall, there is a company that sells a cigarette lighter plug-in battery that keeps things like the radio and clock settings operational while the battery is changed out - this might be a cool device to have around.

Oh, yes, after 4 years, I am pretty sure it is your battery that is the problem - very typical lifetime.

Thanks for the reply. I'm still trying to figure out how to get it out though.... I removed the plastic cover, and also the housing around the battery. Do I need to remove the metal lipwhich is attached to the windshield as well?

I just got a new battery a few weeks ago too.

I had to reprogram the radio, windows & sunroof.

The voice command is the only thing that's giving me a problem, I'm planning to take it to the dealer as I can't find any reset for it online.

I was able to take the battery out by tilting it.

You can drive the car to autozone and they will test it in the car... just saying. Yes it makes it easier to remove the moulding off the window, i dont remmeber it being metal though.

Take a look at this:

I was lucky and didn't have to remove the window moulding to replace the battery.

Were you able to solve this. I have the same problem. Just got my M back from repairs on a fender bender and the voice recognition buttons don't work anymore.

Thanks

I haven't had time to take the car to the dealer but I will soon.

I was able to solve the problem. I allowed the navigation disk to finish loading (as suggested by someone else on Nico) and the voice activation loaded automatically after that. Prior to this the Navigation disk had been showing "Loading...", so I put the car on (without starting the engine) and waited until the "Loading..." message went off and the maps came on and it then showed a message about voice recognition being loaded...almost as if it was sequenced that way.

Thanks

I had to have my battery replaced last weekend. I was out so called AAA. I watched the guy and he had to take off all of the plastic covers on the left side and the plastic moulding around the window. (It just snaps off in two pieces.) He also plugged in some kind of "phantom power" into my cigarette lighter to save my codes. (This did not work, still lost them.)

I think this is because the cigarette lighter gets disconnected from the power whenever the ignition is off. If power can't go out there, it can't come in either. Other people have posted about places successfully doing something to not lose their stuff, presumably at the battery connectors.
