So I've been driving on 3 cylinders for a good month or two, finally got around to swapping the broken injector out for a used one, and followed vancouverbc's nice little write-up here: zerothread?id=179725 . However, I screwed up and now I'm wondering how badly? The new (used) injector I put in didn't have the little plastic cap on the end. I tried to pry the cap off the old injector, but it snapped. So I figured maybe it was unnecessary. Whoops? :D

The car drives now, and has the acceleration back so the injector is working (woohoo!), but it still wobbles/shakes at idle and the exhaust has the noticeable hiccup (putt-putt-putt-putt) that it had with 3 cylinders. Also, it takes a couple seconds for the car to turn over when I start it. What's going on? Do I need to find an injector with a tip on it? Or should I look elsewhere for the cause of this?

Oh, also, I forgot to lube the new O-rings. Huge mistake or minor oversight?

One more thing: in vancouverbc's write-up, he says to use a screwdriver or something and lean in to push the new injector in. I opted to screw the metal cap on it alternating left and write screws, which slowly pushed the injector in without any elbow grease on my part. Anything wrong with this?

FAIL or EPIC FAIL? You decide!

Thanks.

P.S. I moved this from the end of vancouverbc's writeup page to its own thread, lest I be flamed for hijacking.

OK figure out which cylinder(s) is/are bad. Keep pulling spark plug wires. The one that doesn't seem to make it idle much worse is the bad one. Likely it is the injector you replaced, or it could be another cylinder.

If it's the one you replaced do it again right this time. Lube the o rings, make sure it's seated correctly and put in a good (complete) injector.

Your injectors needs to have the pintle cap.

You shouldn't have installed it without it.

As for not lubing the o-rings, that's another mistake. They could've moved/torn during install.

Buy some silicone lube and try again.

Hose pliers help with removal of injectors fyi.

For install, after you lube the injector slide it into the rail then slowly tighten the metal cap alternating from left to right.

Tightening down one side too fast will most likely result in the metal cap breaking.

Just had the same problem on my '93 Hatch. Try putting new O-rings on the injector, $7 at NAPA, grease them up and... take an old toothbrush, shave down the sides of the brush head and scrub out the injector seat. Specifically where the small O-ring seats. You very well may need that end cap on the injector though.
