Hi, i bought a 300zx a few months ago and manged to replace the antenna mast with help from this forum. however, it recently borke again  i dont want to have to replace it again so im wondering if there is any way to get a short stubby antenna in its place.

has anyone done this to their Z yet? if so, are there any kits i can buy to do this, or maybe a certain antenna that will fit. Basically, what should i buy to make this happen. im pretty noobie so any and all help will be appreciated.

Thanks for reading! :gapteeth:

Read through this thread:

Our cars have 2 antennas, the big mast one that goes up and one built into the hatch glass (for T-top models) or the windshield for verts. You just have to flip the antenna adapter around IIRC

Thanks for the quick reply. I did come accross this thread as i searched for answers, however, the previous ownder of my z cut out that double pin connector and spliced in a single one. not sure what happened to the rest of the connector but i only see the single.

which is why i bothered fixing the powered antenna in the first place. thank you for the link tho, the effort is commended. would you happen to know anyone who has made their stubby replacement for the powered antenna a functional permamnent mod? and not just to cover the hole after switching to the hatch antenna?

Thank you! and thanks again for your reply. :D

Then antenna on my Z was broken when I bought it. So I bought a new antenna from autozone for about $15 bucks. It came with the necessary mounting stuff and a cable to mount it in the existing hole. However that antenna was kind of ugly, so I bought a stubby antenna on ebay (or amazon.. not sure now). It just screwed right on to the new antenna base.

It looks better, but gets bad reception.

When I have time, I'm planning on trying the mod I saw where you wind a copper wire around the two male connectors so that the stubby and the window antenna will work at the same time to see if I can get better reception.

I have an aftermarket stereo in it, and am not sure what the PO may have done there for the hook up. Fingers crossed it isn't anything too stupid.

hi,

Thanks for the response. this is EXACTLY what i was looking for. do you happen to have pics of the end result? also, what autozone antenna did you purchase? i see several on their site, however most appear to have this weird ball hinge on it that just looks hideous.

Thank you!

I'll try and take a pic for you to look at.

I just went into the store and grabbed one, can't seem to find the one I grabbed online. It was something like this - http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/ ... 75620_4227_

As far as the ball, I didn't even use it. When you take the old antenna apart, there is big metal bracket that the "body" part screws to. I just took off the ball stuff, to where it was just the cable which has a big threaded head, shoved that up from the inside and then screwed on the top "nut" looking piece. I did add a black rubber washer between the "nut" and the body to help prevent leaks.

That sounds harder than it is.

I'll try to remember to get a pic tonight to post.

Because the reception on this antenna is so bad, I'd probably go with an even smaller "stubby" antenna if I had it to do over... and at 8 bucks for a 2 inch stubby on ebay... why not!
