Hey All,
Hoping for some input as to what I should do. I am doing a front brake job and see that it is recommended to replace the outer wheel bearings. I at the same time am going to replace my driver axle, as the cv boot had been torn for a while, and it will be easier than replacing the cv boot. My questions are 1) Should I also at this time replace the inner wheel bearings? 2) What is the reasoning behind replacing the outer bearings when doing the brake job?

Thanks in advance.

Some info on the vehicle: 2001.1 4WD Pathfinder. 95k mi. Warn Manual Hubs.

Also recommendations for any of the parts would be appreciated.

So far, I am thinking of EBC Green or Yellow stuff pads, Beck Arnley Bearings.
Still not sure on rotors and axle.

Where do you see it is recommended to replace the outer wheel bearings? Repacking with grease sure, but unless there is corrosion, pitting, scoring, etc when you inspect the wheel bearings there is no reason to replace them. You should inspect and repack the inner bearings too - you will need new inner grease seals for those.

Wagner rotors should be good. I have Wearever (Advance Auto parts house brand) rotors and they have been fine too.

I saw it here on the How To regarding replacement of pads and rotors. I guess it doesn't say you "Have" to do it. I just saw it under the parts needed for the job and assumed it was part of the job. I figured it was similar to the strut bearing when you do a suspension job.

Ah, right. I think the guy replaced them while everything was apart "just because". Mine were fine to reuse at 130k-ish when I replaced pads, rotors, and repacked inner and outer wheel bearings. It really just depends on the condition of your bearings. I'd not want to replace good OEM parts with some aftermarket questionable parts.

What are the symptoms of bad wheel bearings? Play in the wheel?
