Removing the silver steering wheel trim?

Hopefully somebody can shed some light for me.

Background story: I've grown tired of the silver plastic trim on the door handles and steering wheel. 3M has this carbon fiber-look vinyl, and I'd like to wrap the silver pieces with the stuff (I'd order a sample piece to get a good look at it before ordering enough to do what I want).

My question: I've been rummaging through the FSM's for the car, but I cant quite figure out if the audio controls are integrated into the silver trim pieces or if the silver trim is just a cover/face plate than can be snapped off. If its all one piece with integrated buttons, that would mean removing the horn/airbag/switch assembly and then separating the buttons from the face plate - which is way more trouble than it's worth. Anybody know what it is?
