When performing the Combination Flasher Unit Check on EL-49 I get a hyper flash.

You mean EL-61? It's showing a 21W lamp for testing, that's equivalent to one turn bulb so it should hyperflash. If you do it with the headlight bulb you should get a normal flash. If it checks out then you must have some sort of screwy wiring problem downstream from the directional switch, in the wires from the switch to where they join with the hazard switch outputs.

BTW, they sell solid state flashers meant for LED's which flash at a normal rate regardless of the load applied to them, they're not thermal like a standard flasher. You can probably fix this painlessly just by replacing the stock flasher with one of those. It just won't warn you anymore when a bulb is out.

I tried to attach photos with no luck. The Nissan 300zx 1990 service manual has the check on EL-49 with a test lamp.

I’ll check out the solid state flasher .

That's weird, it's on EL-61 in the PDF here. But yes, that's the same test.

Should I change any of the bulbs to LED?

If you put in an SS flasher then you can if you want to, but there's no need. The difference in SS flashers is that the flash rate is fixed regardless of the load, so they work at the same rate with bulbs, LED's, or a mixed bag. The flasher doesn't care.

While tearing apart the car, I did notice a small mice nest under the radio, maybe some wires were chewed ?

Success! The solid state flasher worked, there may be a slight delay b4 the directional engages but I don’t care .

Not sure what the Nico Club rules are , but can I buy you a beer?

If you still have any energy left, Next up, since the dash is apart , why are the fog lights not working? I already replaced the relay which was bad with a new working one. Thought that would be easy , but no. The indicator light on the toggle switch does not come in in either position.

I'll have to look up the circuit, I can't recall ever messing with fogs on a Z. I'll get back to you on that.

What about the beer? I could really use one ?

And I guess I should start a new subject addressing the fog lights .

I'll pass on the beer unless you can tell me where to get Moose Head in Arkansas. ;)

Really, this is all just paying it forward for me. Long story, happy to help. :)

See you in the Fog thread.
