So I might be getting a job offer in california, around the lancaster, palm springs area. What do I need to do to get this thing registered over there? I'm never had to deal with smog, or visual inspections or any of that crap (from Idaho). The car is lightly modded, exhaust, fmic, intake, no cat. I know I'll need a cat, but what else?

And how much does it cost to register here in cali, is it different in every city? You have to get is smogged, then a visual inspection, then register it correct? Is there any way to pass all of this? And do you have to get inspections or smog every year, or can you do the lifetime thing? Also, what are the fines for not running a cat or not having the car inspected or smogged? Thanks alot for any help.

All you have to do, is put a '95 or newer KA in there with all the proper emissions equipment(being sarcastic). Yes it sucks and registration will cost 2 or 3 times more than what you pay in Idaho. Same goes for insurance. Smog is every other year and what else.... Oh yeah, now you get to deal with cops tailing you, watching out for thieves, and a lot more little high school kids in their sh*tty Honda trying to race you. Not running a cat is a federal thing. They can bust you for that in the back woods of Alabama. I don't know the fine though. It's a b*tch to play in CA, but it's small sacrifices to live in only the BEST state in the universe!! If you don't feel like doing all that, you can also look around for hookups.

The truth is, you will NOT pass the visual but you can pass the sniffer test. Its illegal though.

Sorry, I meant Palmdale area. So how the hell do people get away with it in cali? I see tons of sr'd cars around there, and it doesn't look like they're getting in trouble. Do they just not get smogged, and inspected? What kind of fines are there for not smogging or getting it inspected?

And how much does all this crap cost to get the car registered in california? I met just sign the title over to my mom, still in Idaho, then say I'm just borrowing it for awhile.

Ya we have the strictest smog laws in america it sucks. You can probaly find a smogger who will pass it for you but you'll have to be willing to pay.

^^^ That guy ended up being a scam iirc, I remember that. But your best bet is to buy a 240 here with an SR in it already, or swap one in yourself.

Hm, so once you get it smogged you never have to do it again? But how do you pass the visual inspections also, are those every year? And how much does it cost to do all of this in cali.....I'm used to $40 registration and that's it in Idaho. It's so nice that way!

No, smog is every 2 years, unless your car is 5 years old, or less.

your car is lightly modded so you have a good change to pass you just gotta find a crappy place that has a "smog check only" with someone that looks like they dont care who goes in as long as they get money..lol it might take some work and talking to people but there are people that will do it.

my buddy got his b14 sr20ve smogged here in So.Cal so it can be done.

No no, you got it wrong. You have to smog your car once every 2 years along with a visual inspection. It's been a few years since I lived in CA, but I'm going to guess you'll have to pay over $100 for registration. Expect about a $500 to $600 6 month premium for full coverage insurance. That is if you're over 25, married, and without moving violations.

That's not what I meant. It's illegal anywhere in the US to remove your catalytic converter. From the backwoods of Alabama to the hills of West Virginia and all the way to the Nazi state of California. I'm fully aware that most places could care less though.

Alright, so whats the worst case scenario if you get pulled over without running a cat and running a sr20 motor? They can't make you open open up your engine bay to check it out right? I could just get a highflow cat to avoid that problem. I don't want to get any huge fines though.

I know I won't be able to register it there, but I can keep it registered in Idaho under my parents.....would that cause any problems at all? Or do you have to register it in CA if you're living there? How much time do you have before you have to register it in cali, don't you have to live there a year or something before you're technically a resident? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

If you you transfer the vehicle to a california vehicle then the worst a cop can do is send you to the state ref. From there you can either pay to not go to the ref, or swap in a KA into your car and go to the ref. I believe you only get 3 chances to skip out on the ref.

What is a ref, is that where you get your car smogged and inspected? How much are the typical fees to do that? And how much does it cost to register a car in california, or does it differ by city? Thanks.
