I'm starting to hear the dreaded hum from behind my back seat. Factory pumps are non-stock in the US and Japan according to Amayama.

Does anyone have recent experience with an aftermarket pump?

I see some Bosch units with part number 69648 that say they're from Japan on eBay. I'm always concerned about counterfeits from non-traditional channels, but at this point I think it's a game of pick your poison. Bosch no longer shows that part number on their site, so I assume they've discontinued that part as well.

The best information I can find here is this thread from 2010. ignored-the-warning-paying-the-price-fu ... 16980.html

I installed a Delphi fuel pump a couple years ago and have had no issues after around 8K miles. It was the most trustworthy brand that I could find.

I've replaced the factory pump with a aftermarket brushless type. Any of the reputable fuel pump manufacturers sell them- like Walbro, Quantum, etc. I've only installed OEM replacement pumps made by Bosch and Carter. They seem to last about 18 months, while the Walbro 340LPH pump lasted about two years. The trick is to replace the FPCU and pump at the same time. I replaced the FPCU and installed a used fuel pump assembly that had 60K miles on it already, and it's running pretty good now.

Wow, that sounds awful! This fuel pump has been in there for over 20 years.

They recommend replacing the FPCU when replacing the fuel pump. I didn't because there were no FPCU to be had at the time. Lesson learned, I ordered a FPCU from Japan via Amayama. Cost about $400, which isn't too bad considering Infiniti was charging around $600 back when they kept them in stock. I swapped both the fuel pump and FPCU the last time around, and haven't had any issues so far. I think it's a sum ofd all the parts- type of thing. My q45 had 126000 miles when the fuel pump went out, but it shorted some the wiring when it did.

Ahh ok, that makes sense. So the controllers will have issues if a pump pulls too much current. I'm hoping to catch mine before it gets too far. I also have some spare controllers on hand.

It's a FET transistor driving a motor, no different from the VBC driving most blower motors. The rule with those is simple: 1) Motor fails but VBC is good, keep the VBC and replace the motor, 2) VBC fails but motor seems good, replace both anyway. The rationale is equally simple: FET's are usually either good or melted, there's little or no halfway. Dying motors often fail halfway, they still run but draw enormous startup current that invisibly blows the FET. So if it's the FET that fails, you always replace both.

Isn't there an aftermarket alternative to the OEM FPCU? I know the Z32 TT also had a 3 stage FPCU (the Z32 NA has a 2 stage). What are the aftermarket solution/replacement for the Z32 TT FPCU and fuel pump? If there are any, it would probably work in the Q45, maybe with a few minor differences. heck, I think the Z32 TT FPCU might even work in the Q45, if you can find one cheap enough.

Aeromotive makes an extremely nice one that's pretty bulletproof. It uses a 40A transistor current-limited at 30A for control, which is much smarter and heftier than the Nissan FPCU's. It's pricey, but you'll probably never need to f#ck with your system again:

I could also build you something to DIY it using a solid state relay (SSR) like a Crydom D1D12 or D1D20. Nobody I know about makes an RPM to PWM converter, but my buds at Widget Man make a fan controller board that has the right tools with some tweaks to the firmware. The advantage to an SSR is that it's cheap and easy to replace if your pump goes bad and blows it up. If anybody's interested, post and we'll talk about it.

Well, heck, now that I'm looking at it, the FPCM line from the ECM looks like it might support a direct hookup to an SSR if someone wants to try an experiment. It will work if the FPCM control line is PWM and not analog voltage. Here's a cheap D1D12:

If it works, just screw the SSR to the floor of the car with some thermal grease, the chassis should provide plenty of heat sinking.

I was looking around in the trunk today, and it appears the bolts on the fuel sending unit on my 1997 have never been touched. Is that probable? 214k miles. It does not hum.
I should probably have a replacement pump on hand, no?

On the G50 the fuel pumps were a known failure point, but I don't think the Y33 was any more prone to failure than any other vehicle. Being that it's becoming more difficult to source parts for our cars all the time it's probably not a bad idea to have one on hand.

Is it not normal to hear the hum of the pump? Would explain a lot of my issues, I do hear a hum from the pump

This ebay seller claims this is a genuine Bosch Japan pump. In a sea of probable counterfeits, going for the cheapest one seems both stupid - and "well, at least I didn't pay much for it" at the same time. For $39 I figured it was a decent gamble.

I'll post up some impressions when I get it.

Got it today. If it's a fake, they did a nice job making it look real. Crappy shelf worn box with a nice layer of warehouse dust on it, sealed bag with a label that says "Made in Japan"

I'm inclined to believe it's really old stock that they're clearing out. For the $ it'll sit on my shelf until I need it. I'll try to post up some pictures later.
