Hey,Yeah you can use an engine assembly lube or just use motor oil like I do.I just use 10w30 motor oil on my bearings as I put them in, I also put my pistons and rings in wet though. Pretty much, in other words, everything that I put in the engine has fresh oil on it as it goes in. I dont know if thats how everybody else does it, but I've been doing it that way for a long a** time and it seems to work just fine. Thanks, Ben

still don't quite know how i'm gonna break in the engine...maybe some combination of almost everything you guys have said...thanks for the help

also...they said i really need to clean up the block and the other stuff before i start puttin it together..what should i clean it with?...thanks

that's what i've always used.

drive it like you stole it.

get the block hot tanked or steamed. both methods are pretty cheap, very thorough, and less time consuming than doing it yourself.

if you want to diy, then i suggest pressure washing it with hot water. get ready to get wet :D . when you're done, make sure you dry it with compressed air then spray the entire block down with a lubricant (wd40) so that it won't rust.

it's all a matter of opinion, and there are a lot of stuff on the market. permatex makes some good stuff though.

there's no need to buy anything expensive either. i've assembled engines with cheap bearing grease. cost me .99 ;) .

I did a quick search here, but it seems nobody mentioned this yet:It is common practice to paint the inside of your block to seal the casting. Since these blocks are sand casted, you can sometimes get junk released years down the road. Particularly after machining and tanking. Go look at any decent rebuild shop for domestic V8's. I don't know why this hasn't been mentioned here before. Is it not appropriate for the KA?

the small benefits of painting an engine block just isn't worth all the time consuming work it takes to do it properly. and if it isn't done properly, you run the risk of running paint chips through your engine.

none of the shops that i've dealt with would even bother with painting since deburring the inside of the block is a much more effective method to remove any excess casting flash.

welp...put it up on an engine stand today and pressure washed the hell out of it then cleaned it off with some rags since i couldn't find my nozzle for the compressor...then quickly gave it a bath with 5w-30 oil...just sprayed it out of a squirt bottle and made sure i just coated the cylinder walls and where the bearings go then used the rest all over the block and head to keep it from rusting...and did the crank...just gotta clean off the pistons tomrrow and i'm good to go...should start assembling tomorrow nite...i hope to get the pistons, crank, and bearings in and also put on the head and oil pan..then i'll save the rest for wednesday...i've been takin pics that i'll post for ya'll later...thanks for all the help
