The easiest way to get excellent sound out of you car is to keep it simple. Im more of an audiophile and an SPL freak, so my set up will be a little more complicated, but for a great sounding set up that doesnt damage the bank too bad, heres a few suggestions:
Get a nice head unit (cd player): you get what you pay for in most cases, but buy online, you will save hella money. Alpine and Eclipse make the best CD players in my opinion, but Pioneer also has some nice high end stuff.
Get a component set as your front speakers. They can play louder than coaxials, and the sound way way better. They consist of a set of tweeters, a set of mids, and a set of crossovers. Brands to look for: MB Quart, Focal, Image Dynamics, CDT. A three way component set is a kick *** way to go, they are very efficient. For the highest quality in sound, go with a component set up front (in some kick panels: they give you way better imaging) and go with some 8"s in the doors. That will allow the 8s to play the midbass, so you can crossover your component set higher, so it can play clearer and louder.
Amplify your front speakers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The CD player is not gonna be enough, believe me. Most CD players put out about 20 watts rms. A nice component set must be amplified. For amps check these out: Phoenix Gold, Orion, JL Audio, Directed, Arc, Zapco.
You wont need rear speakers if you have subs, they will be drowned out. Focus on your front set up, thats where you sit anyways.
Depending on how loud you need your music, two 10s or two 12s should be efficient, especialy if you have a hatchback. These subs kick ***: Audiomobile, Resonant Engeniering, Adire, Image Dynamics, JL, Beyond Audio, Digiatal Designs(DD). Most arent popular brands that all your buddies have heard of, but performance counts, theres nothing in a name. Chack any car audio forum, these names are all over.
When looking for any speakers and amps check the rms power, thats the power the amps put out continuosly, and the power the speakers and subs can handle continuosly.
Make sure your box is built to spec for that sub. All 12" subs dont take the same size enclosure, so unless you know what your doing, save the money up and have one professionally built, because the box is whats gonna decide how your sub performs.
Use sound deadening either Dynamat or Raamat(you can find it on ebay) youll keep more music in, so you wont have to turn your music up as loud, and it gets rid of the ghetto rattle you hear from most cars that have subs.
Thats my two cents, have fun.
