I just bought a Nissan Rogue and am putting it in the shop to have a factory bumper hitch installed (part of the negotiation for the car during purchase).

I noted the car did not have a factory installed back bumper protection pad and service quoted me $45 for the part and $105 for installation.

When I said I'll take the part and install it the service tech said make sure you prep it.

What is entailed by prep'ing it?

Usually, when I'd install anything like this on other cars, I'd rough up the paint and the bottom of the pad, them glue it onto the car. Any suggestions on the glue to use?

Are you talking about the rear bumper protector?

I understand from other forum members it's supplied with 3M automotive adhesive tape. Usually all you do is clean the surface with a non-oil based cleaner (I use non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner) and apply. No sanding or scuffing of the paint required.

There is another recent post about this:

Now to avoid nicking the bumper when hooking up a trailer, I use a 12x12" piece of 1/2 plywood that is notched to fit partway around the ball platform. It's saved me a few times already.

I just had the bumper protector installed on my Rogue last week, paid about $44.00 and the service department at my dealership installed it free. I can't believe they wanted to charge $105!
