its' possible. But will need a bit of modifcation including Rom Tune.

currently running a rom tuned RB20 Auto ecu on my RB25.

I'm also wondering about this... What needs to be done? What chips needed? Can you tune it off a laptop? I need info on which ecu well work with a RB25 series II.

i don't think there is a benefit unless you have z32 ecms laying around and can't source a rb25 ecm. weird i no

I'm wondering about the RB20 ecu... Where is more information on this? Can you only use AUTO rb20 ecu's? Who makes the daughter board to hook it up to a laptop or tune it?

The benefit would be you can't ROM tune a RB25 ecu on the cheap like you can a RB20/Z32 ECU. The internal chip sturcture is differant and it uses really expensive chips. There is a guy here on Okinawa that is driving around with a Z32 in a R33 right now.

I don't do the tunes, but I'm running it, and it works just fine

As mentioned above. Rom tuning a RB25 on the cheap does not exsist.

I have done a little bit of research on it. Seems that If you decide to use a rom type tuning program NISTUNE then you can use the Z32 ecu b/c it has VVT capabilities.

Here is what I found:

One of the workshops we support has his R33 running using Z32 ECU

I'm using Z32 ECU's for R33's for some time now and I can highly recommend it.

Got fed up trying to get 33's running properly using HNR32/HCR32 ECU's. Even after modifying parts of the code to software simulate the throttle switch and a few other things, I still wasn't satisfied ....these things are just too limited. (imo)

advantage of the Z32 ECU is it will retain VTC on the R33 and the Z32 ECU has in/outputs left when used on the R33, which can be used for other purposes (only possible after extensive code modification though) For one customer I reprogrammed a "Z32 ECU converted R33" to have the ECU switch water injection, have a map sensor instead of a MAF sensor and have the "check engine" light come on when detonation was detected.

When using a Z32 ECU you can basically use a stock Z32 binary and copy over the most important constants, maps and tables from the R33. To get it perfect some parts of the code need to be modified, but with stock code it will already run 10 times better then when using a R32 ECU

>> Still to grab the exact wiring modifications required from him

for the RB25DE(T) based R33's these are the wiring modifications:

R33 pin 19 to Z32 pin 34 R33 pin 105 to Z32 pin 110 R33 pin 110 to Z32 pin 105 R33 pin 112 to Z32 pin 114 R33 pin 114 to Z32 pin 112

R33 pin 57: cut Z32 pins 29+52 : join

Best is to use a FIELD harness extender, so you don't have to chop up the original wiring harness.

Because an unmodified Z32 ECU only has 1 detonation sensor input, you will have to choose which sensor you want to use. if you leave pin 23 (r33) connected to pin 23 (Z32), it will monitor the sensor for cyl. 1-3 if you rather have it monitor the rear cylinders 4-6, you will have to cut pin 23 (r33) and connect pin 24 (R33) to pin 23 (Z32)

Only thing I haven't been able to figure out, is how the auxilary fan on the R33 is switched....can't find it on any of the wiring schematics I have.

Jollwah had a typo correction:pin 52 is the pos sig for the crank angle sensor.

the correct pin is 55 (LH exhaust gas sensor).

Info gathered from here: http://ecu2.forumwise.com/ecu2-thread1825.html

And you can get nistune from here: http://www.nistune.com/

Im going this route when tax return comes around.

How? What output from the 20 ecu is switching the vct and how has the ecu been setup to control it?

meet 07 already copy pasted some of the info here, but this is the entire thread, it will give you a little more insight on the setup. I am planning on going RB25DET with a VG30DETT ecu, but using Nistune in conjunction with the VG ecu on the Rb25 instead of just a normal chip.

I asked around and it seems that both TT and non-TT ecu's work.

Been away from Nico for a few days.

This is the exact setup that I am working on. The VG30DE / TT ECU's are the same. The only difference is the stock rom onboard.

I'm at a stand still because I'm waiting on a wideband. and have other 'priorities' (read: house + wife) that take precedence.

@meet07Thanks for posting the pin-out info here on Nico instead of just a link to another site

+1. The more plug and play, the better.

I'd love to just be able to open the box from shipping and plug it in.

Really, I would love to know how you did that.

Could you explain how it works?

He didn't. (Not trying to bust you out, CoolWhip.)

I could possibly dump (pull) the rom if I had it here (in my possession). Or if CoolWhip has a consult cable and something like LiveEdit.

*edit* CoolWhip does have a 20 ECU with a 25 tune on it, he just didn't do it himself. But the harness was also re-pinned. Not sure what all was done, just know it is different. I just wanted to clarify that.

which board is needed for real time tuning? The type 2? Is anything else needed?

Correct, Type 2 board for Z32 ECU. How good are you at soldering?

I believe that you buy the :-board(type-2)...........................................................$200.00 AUS-Rome Emulator(I have one already).........................$175.00 USD-One of the PLMS Consult cables(me usb).................$110 AUS-Individual License.....................................................$200.00 AUS

And I have found a few ecu on the internet for under $100.00 bucks.

So a total of about $685.00 you can tinker with fuel/timing and more.
