I couldn't agree more. It's pitiful the RB community hasn't grown much in the past 5 years. People are willing to pay out the *** to "get it done right the first time". Prices have stayed high and will stay that way until people start shopping smarter and stop being lazy.

prove everyone wrong... do a budget RB build.

The money you waste is yours, not ours. (thank God)

You have fair warning from many on here. So I guess I shouldn't say something as cliche as "hope you don't end up with a $4000+ paperweight" :PAnyways, you can join the NRRBA while your at it, just be sure to send in your dues .

Wow! I cant believe how much money all of have spent on yout rb swaps. Currently I have under 7k into my rb swap. This includes all of the maintenance since 2001 and the initial price of the car. I have also included a rb30 shortblock and a gt3582r (neither are installed yet) in that figure. Of course I dont have a lsd yet, but those are relatively cheap for me @ 480 shipped to my door. I did completely redo the suspension with tokico illuminas, race springs(custom wind), full poly kit, poly transmission mount, poly rearend mount, poly spring seats, new rack, new tie rods, new 18x10 & 18x9 wheels, new tires, new rack bushings, extra wiring harness, new intercooler that will flow enough for 750hp, custom 3" turbo back exhaust, full set of autometer guages( fuel level, oil pressure, oil temp, coolant temp, vacuum/boost, tach, speedo), new aftermarket radiator, new aftermarket electric fans, remote oil cooler and filter block, new maxima shift knob, new recovery tank, 200zr oil pan, 200zr pickup tube, new chromoly driveshaft and I am sure there is more but that is all I can think of right now.

I shopped wisely and did all of my own work. It took me a year to get the car back on the road but now it runs great. I also got a lot of sweet deals through work and freinds.

i guess I should have said just parts. I guess I should have said no amount of money. Okay.....

So if someone gives me a good running rb25 and a rb26 WITH the rb25 transmission, would i really be spending $10000 to install it in my garage with my hands and my tool. Im a perfessional mechanic. Thats why these amounts of money seems so high. Oh and there is no way in hell Im going to pay someone 600 to make me a couple of mounts.

if ur talking about syko's mounts, the $600 gets you..

bad a$$ mounts..for steering rack clearance... turbo elbow w o2 sensorCNC machined trans brackets....and all hardware (arp bolts)

cheaper and more "factory-style application" opposed to mckinney and the other mount "kits"

well you seem to be in an ideal situation, so how about you shop around for everything you need, price a list and then decide. my .02 is that it's not impossible to get it running, but you probably won't be able to do all the "jazz" right away like you want.

like someone else said before: it's your money. stop asking and, whatever you decide, start doing!

Let's put it this way. If the motor and everything is free or "given to you" you can take it and your car to Top Hat Performance in Atlanta and they will install an RB26 for you for either 28 or 2900 bucks (http://www.tophatperformance.com/service/swaps/). So is definately possible to do for $4,000. They do everything needed to get the engine into the car and get it running. Then you have another $1,100 to spend on whatever else you want.

Sorry but If I make my own mounts I doubt I'll pay someone to wire it.

The only think I need that I dont already have for this would be the following..

intercoolersteelaluminum tubingdownpipes

did I miss anything? Of course this is assuming the engine isnt missing anything, and of course I wouldnt be changing the water pump, oil pump and oil pump, because after all ITS A FREAKING NISSAN. How many nissan motors roll around everyday with old crap. just a thought. everymotor doesnt need an instant rebuild.

yeah, so dont buy an r32 motor. now what? Im just saying, its not that important, not like an oil filter. Dont get defensive. but keep in mind that some people dont have money to be doing a full rebuild on an RB26 for piece of mind. Some people have house payments and crap like that. Not all thier money can go into a nissan.

you're not going to want to half *** an rb swap... but to each his own

Well it's a good thing you can work on cars. You'd be horrible at teahing spelling. Just messing with you.

If you are in fact a professional mechanic, you can keep this in the 4k range. Of Course this is assuming that you don't have to pay for the engine/trans. I'm also assuming all you want are reliability modifications so that you can turn up the boost a little and have a good running/reliable car. But, I highly doubt you'll be upgrading the turbo to anything special if you're trying to keep it under 4k total. Unless you buy something used and possibly in need of a rebuild.

I've never met a "professional mechanic" that would take an engine that's been sitting in salvage for god knows how long, and just slap it in without at least changing the timing belt and waterpump. But hey, maybe you like doing things 2 or 3 times. I mean, you are a professional, so taking everything apart to replace that stuff after the engine is already installed, would be no problem for you. When that 10 yr old + timing belt snaps and you take out a valve/ valves at 6 or 7k rpm, pulling the head will be worth saving that initial $ while the engine was out of the car.

Please be careful and enjoy your swap. Yes it can be done reliably for MUCH less than what some of these guys have spent but, be prepared. You will most likely spend much more than $4k.

BTW. If you're arguing spending money on house/family instead off car, don't do the swap. You have too much common sense already.

im not getting defensive. it was definately sarcasm.

you asked about this, and people told you what they did/think, and you completely dissreguard that. there are pictures somewhere around here of a guy changing out his water pump. there was nothing left of the orig pump. it was a rusty mess. but yeah, youre the pro. so why even make this thread? you're going to do whatever you want anyways.

if the house payment takes alot of your income, perhaps you should be in the Sr forum? or hell, the Ka forum? you could prob build a KA-T with $400.

all I wanted to know if there was more hidden cost between installing the 26 instead of the 25. assuming there was a single turbo and a rwd transmission. I tried wording things so that people would find the one thing I didnt cover and use that to screw the question up. goddamn internet forums are useless. Im only on here out of sheer bordem. If i had the money to go and do an RB swap I deffinently wouldnt be on the internet discussing it.

So don't buy an RB, now what? If you don't have the income to do it right, why do it? I have never understood how people are willing to sink so much money into their and sacrifice on so many other things. Great, you will have the fastest grocery getter ever ... if you even have money for groceries. Now this isn't directed at you, because I am sure you have money if you were even considering an RB. I just see so many people that sink all their money into their car, and work 3 crappy jobs, just to get their car stolen or crash it. People act like they have to have 400 horsepower or their life isn't worth living.

/off topic rant.

I had to live in a cardboard box and eat ramen noodles for 3 years so i could save up enough money to buy a Greddy IM for my RB25. I sold my left kidney for a set of Rota P45s so my car would look bling, . . . I love mexico.

wow this thread turned to hell real fast....and reminded me of how much money I have spent thus far (not good).

Forums are an extremely useful tool when you are new to a certain motor/car. Sure you may be a "professional mechanic" but if you are asking these questions you obviously have never worked on an RB motor before and have some serious learning ahead of you.

I understand everyone doesn't have the money to build up a RB26 right when they get it...but if they want to do things the RIGHT way, they will at least tear the motor down and inspect things for wear. They should also, by default, replace a few items. Namely the oil pump (killer of most RB motors along with oil starvation), water pump, timing belt, timing belt tensioner/idler, plugs, etc.

As far as hidden costs...RB26, there are a ****load.

-If you want to go single turbo you will need...>-an ecu upgrade of some kind...$1000 for PFC>-a lot of hose and fittings for oil and coolant plumbing...cost roughly $250 for mine>-money for extra tuning or more instrumentation to tune correctly (EGT, WB02, etc)-oil pan...you will either need to modify the stock one or get an RB25 pan and pickups-transmission...buy a RB25 transmission

There is alot more..but i'm tired of typing

has any of you people ever owned both, is the rb26 worth the extra money, or will the rb25 be just as fun and half the cost. I only ask because I know that even if I went KA-T I would love it. Just because its something new, but would the 26 be worth the extra money if I was only shooting for a 450hp mark?

you can make the 450hp on an unopened rb25, why not.

wow,

for what some of you have spent, you could have gotten a supra TT and been well over300whp now...

im under 5G's i believe with a decent modlist, and to boot the cars been running for over 2 years as my daily.

i have AC on it too... maybe u guys should think about not spending so much lol

2200=full front clip+ lsd+ 5 lug

500-clutch

150= 1 piece driveshaft

mount kit for dirt cheap (i believe under 2 bills new in the box)

spent 200 on water pump and belt+ pulleys.. IMO replacing a oil pump is overkill, when the mileage is verified.

koyo=traded a spare diff for it

widebody-220

AC line-80

5 lug conversion for the front-220

just last week bought the dual FAL's for 120, now to make room for them..

buddyclub exhaust=300

free car guys.

umm 10G's into a 240???? sorry guys

turbodave is doing 2jz's into 240's for the same price. and that comes with a koyo and all sorts of gofast parts that are required to keep it reliable.

i duno about you but id rather have a motor capable of 300-350hp on stock turbos, and 600-700 minimum on stock internals.

and oh ya, it has that sexy inline 6 sound

**edit**

oh ya to the OP, if your expecting to make this a turnkey affair, bring 10G's with you because appearently people are spending that and more and STILL without a running car!!!

Your answer is yes and no, the 25 is more than capable to reach 450hp. You want to save cash , go 25, the parts are out there, you just gotta do you reasearch and ask the right questions. if you have tons of cash, go 26, it has a much larger aftermarket support.IF you can find someone who has a swapped 26, toss em 30 bux to go for a ride and see how you like it.problem solved

If people only wanted a stock RB25 as a daily driver, there would be many more people around the $5000 mark. But how can you even compare budgets when you got a free car? Lucky bastard. I bet its nice though.

BTW the last time I checked supra TT's didn't go for anything less than $20k with under 120,000 miles. I should move to GA, maybe things are vastly cheaper than everywhere else in the states.

lol free cars arent all they cracked up to be!

junkers they were, mostly. id bet anyone who got a free car on here has, like me, put alot of time into not only the motor but also the chassis to make it presentable.

The budget RB26 has been done.

PVC Intercooler pipes240sx factory exhaust piecesNo cluster (to read proper readings)Can't drive it more than 100miles since they have no clue to its running condition

doesn't idle correctly

Yup, I believe Vin Diesel would look under the hood and say, "nice way to spend ten grand"

Just that the ebay auction was funny so i posted it
