basically when going over rough roads,or a bump, not metallic, more like a rubbing together noise, sounds like it is coming from the center of the door

can you tell me how loud it is?

i just battled a rattle/grumble myself in the rogue. (thats why im asking questions & trying to narrow it down)

[mine was only when on the highway at higher speeds, and gently turning right on the highway. it would sound like a fludder/vibration/very quiet, but bassy. not loud enough to hear above the music - but certainly enough to hear it if the music was low. kind annoying and once you notice it- you never stopped hearing it when turning right at highway speeds]

mine is at any speed, just going over rough surfaces, drives me crazy, not a constant noise but enough to make you nuts, had aFord Escape that did the same thing, never could find the cause, must had rags and carboard in every little crack, figured getting the Rogue that this would never happen again. Guess not, I know if I take it the Dealer that it won't happen with them. Just hoped that there would be someone else on here that was having or had the same problem. Guess I'll ride in the back with someone esle drivingv and try to narrow it down

park your car, and open the back door. jiggle the seat (the back portion) see if thats the noise

check the tire jack and associated tools near the spare tires, make sure the spare is tightened down...maybe even take everything out and see if the rattle is still there

if your rogue has a pop-up tray organizer check to see that it is properly tightened(4 plastic nuts on each corner).

Also in the 2 little cubby holes in the trunk corners, where your wheel lock key is, check to see if that is properly secure and not rolling around/vibrating.

As well as I believe the hatch has these little rubber bumper stops, try adjusting those to see if there is too much play with the hatch closing.

Good Luck

This car only has 3500 miles on it, whats going to happen when this thing gets some miles on it

GREAT POST. you took the words right out of my mouth.

ok, if you checked all of those, and checked the rear seat by gently shacking the back portion of the seat(common rattle) and you cant find anything loose in the rear, i can tell you that there is only 1 option left. it will require you too take out the tray organizer and apply something called RTV between all the plastic. i did this and it reduced a lot of my noises and crappy plastic sounds from the rear.

I think I had the same noise with you. Mine was like a loose screw on the metal of the hatch door. Whenever I passes a small crack on the road or a certain shaped irregularity, I was hearing that noise. I did EVERYTHING to find it. I adjusted the rubbers on the hatch door, removed everythnig from the trunk, released the middle seatbelt buckle from its roof mount...finally, today I found it.

It is the trim pieces on the hatch door. I insert strips of self adhesive foams under the three pieces (center and left and right trims) on the hatch door. These pieces are the ones that are closest to the hinges.

The method I used is this: close the hatch, go inside the car and start hitting the trims carefully with your hand. You will find the points where the trim is touching the metal and causing noise.

Will give it a try, thanks, also had someone look under the car. he noticed that the metal plate between the car frame and muffler might be hitting the frame when going over rough roads

I have the same issue with the rattle in a 2010 Rogue 360. When I go over bumps, I got a rattle in the rear hatch area. I tried the center trim piece by the hinges and its still there. I removed all the trim pieces from the rear hatchback and removed everything from the trunk and I still got the noise. I also looked under the car for any loose shielding and suspension parts. Has anybody found out where this noise is coming from, its very anoying.
Thanks :wtf2:

i applied RTV sealant between everything in the rear trunk area. it was very effective. i basically made gaskets between everything.
i even took out the rear tray right above the rear tire

The sound I got seems like metallic like something is loose and is bouncing around. I found little areas that would have caused a small noise, but nothing that stopped the noise. The only thing left in the trunk was the plastic side trim pieces that hold the jack. I don't think its the back door because I stripped everything off it. The only thing left back there are the side panels and the roof panel.

I found my rattle using a NHV tester and it pointed to the rear hatch. I adjusted the stops out by 1/2 turn and the noise stopped.

I have the same issue...glad I found this. I've turned that thing upside down and inside out so many times. Currently I am driving with nothing in the back at all but the spare tire as it is bolted downa dn doesn't even wiggle if I try (took out the jack, etc). Mine sounds like a rink-a-tinka-tinka, like metal on plastic. I see ImStricken made gaskets all around. Could you explain that a bit more please? And BTW, the dealer could give to craps it is out of warranty.
Thanks!
Tony

go to any auto parts store and buy this stuff:

and simply apply a small line between any two plastics that make contact. (plastic on plastic, or plastic on metal). this stuff dries to a rubber cement like structure. removable by pealing like a sticker, yet firm to allow two parts to not make contact. great stuff.

I had a rattle in my rear hatch that sounded like loose change over bigger bumps and I turned the rubber bump stops a few turns to the left and it seems to have fixed it thus far. I believe it was the latch making the sound because the hatch would move back and forth over bumps. I know it may not be the same issue that the OP is having but just wanted to throw that in there.

Thanks followingnfront! I'll look at that too...didn't realize those could move. Imstricken...I can't see what the stuff to buy in the auto parts store is. it just keeps "houseglassing" on the spot you wrote it in.
Thanks,
Tony

My friend and I messed with the trunk more and it was the rubber stops, the lower ones...I hadn't even noticed them somehow...they were a bit finicky getting them to the right nmber of turns, but that did it!

I have the same rattle you described going over bumps...this is so frustrating, Nissan insists they can't hear anything and no one seem to find the cause! I'm growing tired of Nissans, it seems to me the mechanical pieces are reliable but everything else falls apart fast. Let me know if you find what it is....thanks.

I just read this idea and I really like it. I might try it next time I have any squeeks. Do you notice any staining on the plastic surface or do you only use it on hidden areas?

i only used it between any two pieces of plastic that mate together. and i dont think this would stain the plastic anyway. its nothing more than high temp rubber cement. once dried, it just peals up/off if need be. this stuff is great to keep plastics from tapping, rattling, scratching, etc.

more and more cars are going to develop these noises, as cheaper and lighter plastics are used to reduce cost and weight. the plastics will be more susceptible to deformity when the temps change in a car.

I have a 2011 Rogue that had a rattle for months in the rear hatch. I would sound like a combination of squeak and ringing sound (sounded like an oversized steel washer rolling around loosely on bolt). It was very loud but after parking I would always forget about it until driving it the next time. Finally the weather improved and I gave it the complete once over. Took off what I could but it was still very difficult to determine where the sound was coming from by pounding with fist in various places.
While trying to figure how to remove the main plastic cover I noticed up near the window on the passenger side there was a 1/8 inch gap between the plastic and metal. I could see two clips through the gap and was actually trying to release them but couldn't. So Instead I pounded the plastic with my palm and it clicked into place (both places).
The noise has went away completely and it is heaven. Unbelievable that all it took was snapping the trim back in place.

You guys have literally saved my sanity! I also had that incredibly annoying rattle coming from my hatch area. I thought maybe it was coming from the license plate rattling against the door. Nope. Then I thought maybe it was the seat or seatbelt. Nope. checked the cargo area..still no solution. You were dead on with the bumpers. I had no idea they were adjustable. I went to the outside of the hatch and started pressing on the door to see where the sound was originating and it definitely was coming from the hatch. Adjusted the bumper on the upper part of the door and voila..no more squeak! :woot: Thank you so much!

Had a similar problem at 12,000 miles, it was driving me nuts. Took out parcel shelf- no joy. Took out spare wheel and all bits - no joy. Ran with rear seats down- no joy.
Noticed when I had all my garden rubbish in back, no problem
Always suspected rear door, so put some tape round catch (Rear door lock) this fixed problem. But dont put too much round as you may not get door open. The tape has started to wear, so I will renew, and report problem at next service.

There is a design problem with the lock. When you open the hatch and poke the lock mechanism (as if the hatch is locked), you can feel it wiggles 2-3 mm after it is in the locked position.

Try this: Close the hatch and push and release the hatch with your finger for 3-4 times. Push from the bottom of the licence plate (the 2-3 inch flat metal edge of the hatch). You will see that rattle is from the lock.

What you can do:

1. Adjust the four rubber bumpers. Test some different adjustments. If you unscrew those too much, the hatch won't close easily.

2. There is a bent metal rod, which is the part of the lock that is attached to the rear of the car. Put electric tape around the OUTSIDE rod, 4-5 turns. When you close the hatch, tape should be in between the lock mechanism and the rod (use the slightly angled portion of the rod as a reference). If you put too much tape (more than 4-5 turns), the lock will cut the excess tape. Unroll the tape until it won't cut.

For both 1 and 2, after doing anything, test if the noise is still there or not by pushing from the bottom of the licence plate.

I had the same noise issue for a long time and with the electric tape solution it is gone. Just try. If it solves the problem, you don't have to go to the dealer.
