i spent $165 on primer, color and sandpaper. no clear. i sprayed 3 coats of color. i used around 20 cans of color and about 15 cans of primer. i had to go back over stuff cause my dogs would rub up against the wet paint and i kept getting bugs in the paint. this was my first paint job so i also went through a bit more paint learning which technique i was best with. once i get a finish sander ill color sand the next job in half the time. if i was to do it again i would probably only use 10 cans of primer and 10-15 cans of color. heres kind of a rough idea of the whole process...1. fix all imperfections.....use 180 grit to sand to bare metal....mix filler and repair dents....sand filler with 40 and 80 grit to get semi level....sand with 100 grit to smooth and level some more....sand with 180 grit to smooth for primer, should be pretty smooth and level by now2. primer time...i used duplicolor filler primer, 5 coats all 5 mins within each other...block sand all primered areas starting with 240 them block with 320, after the 320 u should see all the low spots that will need more filler, refer back to 1....wet sand with 400 grit...optional but i did spray 2 more coats of rutoleum primer for rust protection then wetsanded again with 400 grit.3.color time....use color of your choice spray 1st coat as light as possible but yet enough to get cloudy coverage.....let tack for 3-5 mins then respray more to get a more solid color layed.....let dry....wetsand with 400 grit to get rid of orange peel....spray one thicker coat than the first two let tack then spray another light coat. always spray form the most top point and slowly work your way down.....let dry then wetsand with 600 grit. always wash off with water in between coats and after sanding, then let dryhelpful note....let sand paper sit in bucket of water for 30 mins to soften up paper a bit so u dont nic or scratch the paint.....spray last coat, should be thicker of coats then let dry. coverage should be even and smooth.4.color sanding time....use 1000 grit to wetsand the entire car, eliminate as much orangle peel as possible.....use 1500 to wetsand entire car, can still remove orange peel but it should be gone now.....look at the car from an angle and u should start to see a gloss but still kinda a haze...thats normal you are doing well. ....wetsand with 2500 grit, this is the final wetsanding, take your time be gentle dont nic the paint cause youll have to resand with a more course grit or even re spray color.....wash car with water let dry them pull out the buffer. use a foam pad and get the trizact and start on one panel. work the buffer slowly around 1000rpm anything faster may cut through the paint. do not let trizact dry on car do smaller areas at a time. wipe off any remaing trizact once you get the desired shine. ....after car is buffed with trizact use a caranuba wax and wax the car. stand back and take a look. your done.

there more but thats kind of a idea, im sure i missed some things but the end result doesnt show it. working in a body shop im picking up new things everyday so my next job can only come out better.

you work @ a body shop and you're spray painting?

lol@that.

anyways.. normally with real paint, shouldnt you let it cure before you start sanding away?

i got a compressor but real paint is expensive. this paint job was more of a learning deal to practice. all in all is wasnt that much work, it may seem like it but it wasnt all that bad. its a cheap alternative and looks good. my s14 will be sprayed with a gun and real paint. i also started this before i was working at the shop so i decided to finish it. yes w/ real paint u let it cure for a month but this is rustoleum its ready to sand in 24 hours. why spend all the money on real paint to mess something up and be behind how much $. real paint also takes just as much if not more work too. its kinda like driving, dont jump in a high hp car and expect to be the best driver, start with a p.o.s. and learn to drive it then make more power.

uhm nope your in correct on real paint being more work.

hvlp FTW, being an ex painter it is much easier with a real gun. Only downside I see is price and the mixxing. Dont take it wrong though, I'm with you on cheaping out on the paint for a beater....

I think pictures and seeing it up close and personal are different things. I think if you got next to the car, you'd be able to see the paint deficiencies.

So in short, if you've got a decent paintjob now, don't sand down and start rattling!

I will say his paintjob is definatly an improvement over the multi-color first pics goodj ob!

As I said the previous owner did the tinting...it looks to be about 10 percent and is really annoying as I cannot see out of it very well

the part i like about the spray paint is when or if i have to repair dents or scratches its simple. no clear to blend no color matching and its only $3.50 a can.

it looks better in person, yeah there are some flaws but as with most jobs there will be.

Pretty good. It shows what a little extra work and ingenuity can do. A real paint job is not cheap. You can achieve some good results with rattle cans if you take your time. The only question is how long with the job withstand the weather and time. But for $165 dollars??... You can repaint your car every year, if you like....

You did a very good job, I had a CRX project I painted with cans and it did not turn out so well. But in my defense, here in south florida it's hard to find a day that isn't humid as hell.

All the same I know how much time you must have spent, you can't buy that kind of experiance. It looks better than almost every Maco & Earl Schuab job I've seen. Again, nice work!
