What setup you going to use for welding?

tungsten inert gas. :gapteeth:

Don't have the welder right now. I have the cash for it, but to me it doesn't make sense to buy it this summer for it to sit in the garage for my final year of college. So for now I been working on everything to the point of need of a welder.

I been talking with a japanese tuner, welder by trade in the past (under water welding too), he recommend getting the newer Miller Dynasty 200DX. Even a year after given the recommendation, looking around, he is right for what fits my need for my shop tool collection.

This just leaves me time to optimize the roll cage, already began drawing up the basics. I have quite a bit more to do, but it's slowing coming together.

Roll cage looks great. Is that AutoCAD you're using there? Or maybe Inventor or Solidworks.

Inventor. I am more used to Solidworks, but I am forced to learn Inventor. So far it's been a pretty impressive tool too as well.

I think somebody on 3zc has a full 3d model of the 300zx, not sure if its 100% to scale though...

I seen plenty of 3d models of the 300zx, but they are all surface models, or meshes of the exterior of the car. Kinda like a paper model, not a true frame. The way I been doing this roll cage is that I measured the frame for a confinement area to keep the cage within. Then I been looking over FIA, NASA, and SCCA regulations on exactly what I need.

As you see I have quite a bit to add. Main hoop backstays, main hoop diagonal bars, side impact bars. The front hoops is going to need a straight bar to support the first bend because it's so long as per regulations.

Fun mostly. :gapteeth:

No, updates. My aunt moved out, so all the junk is out of the garage. Now the car sits in the garage safe from the elements. Not much I can do until I get the welder, which is not soon. So in the mean time I been looking at the shopping list and educating myself as each component needs.

I began on my blog if any thing to be considered progress.

I wanted to make a blog for a while. Kind of a window of my home shop progress and growth. A friend finally annoyed me enough to buy the domain name. He hooked me up with the hosting and WordPress. I did the rest.

Most of what I have to say about the car is done for this year, same for this thread. I have to finish my last year of college... get a job.. move...Image

In the mean time I will figure out how to get AWS to hook me up for free tig welding certificate.. of course training is included!

And in absence of car work I might do monthly tech articles to keep dust from growing on the website.

And those who are wondering what my resent topics of research are:

dry sump pumps... and higher compression + boost (like 10:1 on pump gas)

Oh, and a "request" for a topic...the VK56 you and TG brought up, any tech info and such would be awesome and I could run it past my Z guy who is a swap pro...

Hmm, that would be a whole new project if anything. I looked into just getting the engine just to study it mechanically to determine how to build it up. But the cost of a new engine would take away from the cost of my current project. So my eyes are open for a cheap one laying around with full harness. I might do a full tear down analysis post, but that will be ages from now. I imagine it will look like her sister the VH45DE..and she looks like this:
Image

Not much I can post about it. But right now I can tell you, all VK56 comes with an automatic transmission. You will need to adapt a transmission if you not want to stick with the bulky sludge box. Depending on your choice of abuse (drag, track, or just street).. your options are unlimited.

There's adapter plates for them if you want to spend the gem: ( you know I'll be making my own when time comes around)
http://shop.driftemporium.com/NISSAN-TI ... DAPTER.htm

Image of a adapted VK56 with Z33 transmission:
Image

Only warning is... get a 05 year or higher transmission.. they have a sticker on them.. usually says CDXXXX... the XXXX is series/revision number..revision number -005 is the lowest you want... 000-004 have weak sycrhros for 3rd gear.

Here's a tear down of the 350z transmission (notice my custom title/link for it :naughty: ):
Image
You can see how stout the gears are, but...3rd gear craps out... over high power abuse...chances are drag racing abuse. Tracking offers less stress of components, but most of the time I might be in 3rd gear. Obviously, I decided to tackle the beast if it comes.

I am a track car junkie, by the time I roll around to making it.. I might just source a GTR rear transmission and play with it.. utilize the shifting. Maybe play with it's guts to ensure reliability and maybe delete the AWD. All will come clear when the time comes. But for replace-ability, I might just stick with the Z33 transmission.

Good stuff, and thanks for the link....MMMMmmmm, ITB's for the VK there also, but <cough, cough> 2,200 bones...
I may be looking at a TT to become the daily and park the NA until time and money allows a swap, if so I will have to start seriously thinking about what to put in it.
A VK56 with ITB's and a Z33 6-speed could be interesting it seems...although my Z guy specializes in Skyline swaps so I have two basic choices so far.
Ahhh, choices...

8000rpm vk56 with ITB's and straight pipes would be the most godlike sound.

So rare, kick your family out and get started on the project already!!! :D

Man that would be a BLAST taking that car for a run, or even getting a ride with the driver for a all-out run!
Damn thing sounds awesome, just a rush taking it all in on the driver's view portion.
Road courses have ALWAYS been my favorite, and like many I'm sure I've always wished I had a chance to work towards running these cars...

I appreciate any specialty car for what it is and can do, although I am never a fan of the Top Dog or #1 guy like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, etc.

Unfortunately without being a race driver though, we'll never get the chance to put even a car like the GTR through it's paces much less a Saleen, Ferrari, etc. so we make do with what we can get ahold of and root for the underdog!

The whole race car may cost that much in parts...probably a bit less... :nono:

The actual cost for it is about 700,000 if you want to start your own GT1 race team...

Things changed a little, so no welder.. soon.. But it's still in sights for next year like I originally stated. Just the cash for it went somewhere else... :chuckle:
