hey ok so starting about a month ago my car only when it was cold out and sitting for a lil while when i would turn it on, it would make a high pitch squeeling sound, not all the time though, it was very random so i wasnt to worried.then it became more frequent, like every morning it was cold, every time i started it after it had been sitting for a lil while. (sounds like a hamster running on a wheel but very high pitch, would do it once started, in reverse, and then while getting up to speed untill i let me foot of the gas a litltle (dropping the rpms)) (longest it would do it is a min or 2)

so i went to my mechanics. let it sit for 30 mins. started her up and she started squeeling. he pinpointed it was the rad belt, so changed it. next morning did it again, so wasnt the rad belt. took her to my other mechanics, let it sit but it was a warmer day so wouldnt do it. now it hasnt done it since that one time after changing the rad belt.( a week) its been really warm but the past 2 days its been really cold. and not a sound.

yesterday started her up, and for a millisec once turned over made the sound. but that was it.today made the sound for a millisec again once turned over, but now as i was reversing out of my driveway turning the wheel very sharp it would do it, so i turned my wheel back straight and it stopped. turn the wheel sharp and would do it..see how this is so random. ive listened while its done it and it is loudest the left corner of where the belts spin.

anyone have any clue what the heck this can be, in order for any mechanic to find the problem i would have to let them drive it for 2 weeks as its so random. and now that its getting warm out it may not even do it anymore till fall :S

thanks guys,,, sorry for the chapter

yeahh ive got the same prob on my b14. used to only squeeze when it was cold but after hooking up the new gauges it started to do so everytime i started her up. doesnt last more than 5 secs in warm weather but in cold i have to keep revving the engine til it hits 13V on the voltmeter. no idea why

yeah really loud and ear piercing. i rarely ever go to a mechanic. i just look on the FSM, ask on nico. if im really unable to get answers then i'll go to a mech. but since this isnt affecting the car's performance, im not too worried, but it is a bloody nuisance

when it squeals while you are driving, does it do it more while you are driving straight ahead or when you are making a turn?

if it happens more on start up and only happens occaisionally when driving, I'm wondering if it could be your alternator belt; if it's loose, it will squeal and it does it more on start-up because it has to work harder until it warms up

ok; guess I'll dig a little deeper

sidenote - did you have any charging issues with the alternator before you changed the belt?

I had the same issue. It was a belt, so I changed out all my belts (while doing one, might as well do them all). It squealed a bit after I did that, but the thing to remember on belts is they do stretch over time especially when they are just getting broken in. So have the belt tightened.

Mine still occasionally (very rarely) squeals on really cold days. It could be because the cold effects the belt in bad ways, although I like to think its the Z's way of protesting that it doesn't belong out in the cold.

so i noticed, when i play with the ac and heat power, the squeeling sound it varies a lil. could just be a coincidence. but if not then what would that mean?

i say you pop the hood open and start it up while someone listens to where its coming from.

try spraying some wd40 on the belts...that might fix it, who knows

Let me take a guess might be a water pump. Had the same thing on my old Chevy Nova.

Don't know exactly what wd40 is supposed to do to belts as it is supposed to be used on metals.

But at most automotive stores they have spray cans of belt treatment stuff. Supposed to help quiet down belts and make them last longer. I have never used any of this product so no idea how it works.

it works exactly the same way....WD40 is not only for metals, why don't you do a little research and see all the stuff WD40 can actually do. LOL you can even use it as a stain remover

It might corrode rubber compounds.

ask them if they have ever tried it......all it is is a lubricant much like any other, belt squeels? WD40 fixes it as any other product would, at 1/4 of the price
