Hurrikane wrote:ok so ram air does not work. so turbos.supercharges and NOS dont work to.after all all thay do is speed up the air and add psi to the intake.ram air does this but in smaller amounts.you may not gain hp but the hp you have will stay the same at higher speed and the motor will not have to give up hp to intake air.as the speed of the motor get higher it takes in less air .the ram help to keep the same amount of air flowing. I have been a A/C tech for over 18 years i work cfm.and air speed every day.the problem with most rams is that thay are to small to work right. a frind has a camro with this setup the hood part is nice and big but when you open up the hood the runners get very small and that not much help.and as for bikes (I DONT KNOW S***) arent thay 2 strok and car are 4 strok right.

I'm with you on the fbody ram air setup. But the part about turbos must not work according to that article is not valid.

Air rushing at a car trying to come through a port/hood nostril is by no means the same as the pressure a turbo applies. I'm not trying to flame you but that article I posted is not BS.

Most times ducting air into the engine bay like most people want to do, is just a glorified cold air intake setup.

But the original argument is to shed light on the 'ram air' thats supplied in autos. I too used to think different until I spoke to many people on the subject. If I were to convert my car to a Ram Air setup, I'll actually lose hp compared to the K&N FIPK that I currently run now. (I'm talking about my TA that is :) )

Ok, that article is correct in saying that a ram air set-up will not "compress" the incoming air. Well, duh, I owned a turbo car for 11 years and have done extensive research on compressor maps and fluids, I already knew that. All that ram air is supposed to do is this: Since an N/A engine DOES NOT have a 100% volumetric efficiency, due to the fact that at high RPMs there is very little time to completly fill the cylinder (which is why getting a denser air charge helps). If a ram air system can keep atmospheric pressure in an intake manifold throughout the engine's RPM range, it is indeed making more power since there isn't a vacuum. You don't have to have high PSI to make more power, every little bit helps. Geez, I could go on and on, but, I think everyone will understand this even though it is a very short explanation. As for doing tests using 1/4 mile times (or 1/8 mile) not being accurate......that's a bunch of BS. I'll do 4 consecutive runs, 2 without ram air, 2 with. I can be very very consistant with launching and shifts. If I don't see any gains, I'll go back to my regular Injen intake.

alot of bull**** talk and nothingm meaningful.. Yea so what if the air doesn,t actually compress, the item we are talking about isnt called a compression air, but a ram air. God it must be nice to be a engine and for once in your life when you open up your mouth for food already have it at your lips. The whole point isnt to compress the air and creat a cheap turbo, but to give the throttle the coldest possible temperature and not make it have to work for it. You siad that it is a glorified intake, well my goddam glorified intake gave me more horsepower than any "regular" intake kit on the market and that I can guarentee. I am giving it the coldest it can get. enough said , go enzo and all those that wanna be creative, it isnt for ****, because I did it and I guarentee you will see a difference. By the way neitzche said there was no god so we have to believe him to.

Amen, Slakker!! I KNOW I'll see gains from this ram air set-up. Glad you back me up on my thinking of ram air. Some people just get the concept confused with turbos I guess. Who knows.

The article stated that all nozziles are backwards, and in order to increase pressure, you need a nozzile that has a larger entrance than exit. that is bull. The article keeps relating all this to Kinetic energy. I can gurantee that the air moves faster at the end of a cone than in the entrance. K=1/2(MV^2). So as you see, as the air moves faster, kinetic energy increases. And also, that part where the article talks about the pressure being how many times the molecules hit the side of the container in any given time. this is true, but the only way that can change (in a constant volume) is an increase in temperature (hotter air, which would, in theory, increase pressure), or an increase in pressure (turbo, supercharge, way bigger increase than temp. change). Maybe i misread this article, but i dont beleive it. It does lack physical and experimental evidence to be considered a scientific paper. Ram- On!

By the way, air does compress at speeds less than mach .5, what do you call wind, and turbulance. its a change in pressure of the air from one point to another. it might not be that big, but its there.

if u want, ill get the issue date, but it was sport rider i believe, and measured air PRESSURE. i know i said that before, but what im getting at is, is the ram air (fancy cold air or whatever u wanna name it) works well enough, actual pressure builds up in the intake box (or, to be correct, less vacuum). ill re-read it when i get back to madison, but i think this shizzo will apply to cars too. i guess its all in the desing. for their displacement, these bikes have HUGE air inlets, so for the KA, that would be some sizable holes in the bumper, or hood. ill poke around and hopefully i or someone can get some math here and work it out.-Enzo

Have a friend take you out in his car and do 120mph. Stick your head out the window open your mouth really wide and inhale. .....now, try to tell me ram air doesn't make HP and TQ. Enuf said.

Cool, looking forward to seeing it. I'm working on my design a little bit today. May not get anything built as of yet, just kind of getting ideas and planning out the best way to construct it.

I got a pretty wacked out idea. Hook up a pressure gauge, or get a MAF readout for the before and after.

If you shoot air at a brick wall at 1000mph do you think the air pressure at the wall is higher than usual? Im pretty sure it is. Ram air would work but on obviously a much smaller scale. Air has weight, and i think the average air pressure at sea level is something like 14psi. I could be WAAAAY off on that. The air waaay up has far less pressure to it. This alone tells ya something.

*should work on a small scale*

14.7 psi at sea level.

Hey MikeMurphy,

If I recall correctly, the air pressure way up there in British Columbia is a lot less dense than, say, Mexico........right?

lol.......It's late and I've had a few......

well other than air mass, the temp change is awesome. i tested with a test temp probe and at idle at running temp the gauge was at 146 before the throttle. After reconnecting in the same external temp and the engine at the same temp the readout was 62 degrees f. The outside temperature was 56. Now what was that fact about colder air combusting better than warm air............geez.....?.....?...? I could have sworn that i heard that somewhere.....nah maybe not. Once again end of discussion forum closed. Please be sure to tip your waitress on the way out.P.S. this was at a standstill, not even attempting the ram air effect, but i am sure that at 55 mph the 6 degrees i lost would be recouped. then again who cares a 80 degree drop in temp.

I just had an idea. Would it be possible to use "ram air" system to spin a turbine, attached to a compressor in the intake path? With the shape of a grill like those on the pig noses and S14, one could stick a turbine in the path of the air flow. It's probably way easier to go with an exhaust turbine, but what about using both? I know its a cracked out idea, but I thought it was pretty amusing (and maybe possible).

you would have to have a big azz snout on the pig nose, and need to be going pretty dayum fast for the turbine to spin fast enough to make the compressor anything more than an annoying restriction... i dunno, ill hold a little pinwheel out the window and see how fast it spin, then calculate something something ....-Enzo:D

Hehe......just remember that turbos are powered by some hot ***, fast moving air. It won't work man. I have a turbo that is electric....it's a T3, but, I havnt been able to get a motor that will last. It sure pushes some freakin air though. Just one of my projects....lol. I need to get back to working on that one......

Same image I have had for ages, and have posted quite a few times. If you are curious as to its effect / build then a search may be in order... Been running this for about 2 yrs now, btw.

And if it didnt work I wouldnt have it in there as its a pain in the *** over a simple filter removal when cleaning, and gets extreamely dirty rather quickly, so I have to go through the ordeal more often.
