My radio is the orginal bose radio and the original speakers and im wanting to replace the radio due the fact it doesnt exactly work to well. I went on crutchfield and found this one http://www.crutchfield.com/p_158GT270MP ... etails-tab. My questions is since it isnt a bose radio, can i just instal it and be done? or is there something else i have to do?

Its more complex than that. Theroetically yes but you need two things. A wiring harness crutchfield sells them. And you need a converter PAC SOEM-4
Universal 4-channel line output converter

If it was me though if I was changing th head unit I would run new wires and change the speakers. Its going to sound bad otherwise. But if you think the factory radio sounds good you will be happy with just a wiring harness and the converter.

What speakers would you recommend? Also what do you mean by run new wires?

read the stereo installation write up thread. If you have a bose stereo with bose boxes you need to read that if you are thinking of changing the speakers. If you dont. then you can try to find speakers that fit in the factory brakets and simply cut the connectors off the factory speaker wires then wire up your speakers. But the factory wires can get electrical interference if you dont want to cut wires and are worried about interference I mean pulling nerw speaker wires through the car like hooking up a normal stereo.

Hi BlackWidowZ,

I was following this thread and yours. I followed up on the info for the PAC SOEM-4 and was directed through reviews to hunt down a PAC ROEM-NIS1 for a better product and much easier wiring. It dosn't seem to list the 1990 though, just 92 and up. Do you think that this would work as well or better than the SOEM? Were the Bose systems different after '90?

I actually just got back inside from installing my Pioneer speakers which just arrived today. The last owner had some kind sound system in it, which he changed all the speakers and the unit, but gutted all of them out for the purchase (he left all the wires). I realized after removing the door panels when installing my front speakers, there was a blue plug which had been disconnected, so it got me wondering what it was for. On the little panel where the speaker goes, the factory speaker wire with the connections were there, but little did I know, those didn't work. The blue plug runs to this little box (some Bose thing, I guess), and out come the cables that connect to the speakers. What the previous owner had done, is he kind of bridged the box out of it by disconnecting 2 of the 4 wires that were in the plug, and running speaker wire out of them with the connectors. They work great. I will post pictures tomorrow, it is too late now to take them, I know it sounds confusing. As of now, the front speakers are installed and functioning properly. The rears however, have the same plug, running to the same little box (one per speaker), but the speakers don't work when I hook them up. I'm going to do the same thing the seller did on the front, and cross my fingers and hope it works.

I'm not too sure on how to upload pics to threads yet (I'm new) so if anyone wants to help me out that'd be great! :dblthumb:

Blue plug has 4 wires? That's the connector for the factory amp. He tapped into the audio input wires. Very common thing to do. However, not sure why you'd have the PAC if the amps are bypassed. Pretty sure that can be taken out at this point.

Yes, the plug has 4 wires on it, but the blue plug is not the one that plugs into the amp, it is behind the door panel more or less around the window switch/ door handle area. Is there one small amp per speaker? What's PAC?

Muse, there's a lot to it. At least to mine, which I thought it'd just plug and play, but I like to investigate and figure this stuff out.

PAC is the box behind the radio.

Muse, your amps are blown, and if you have an aftermarket head unit, then you won't be able to use your cassette deck. Even if it's stock head unit, th cassette player could be fried.

Then those capacitors in the amps are on their way out.

The head unit is usually pretty reliable. The addons (cd, tape, ect) aren't. I'd bet if you cracked those amps open, you'd find some flat black pieces with scorch marks around them.

If you don't know how to solder, then yes. Otherwise you could repair the amps.

If you're going the replacement route, o recommend running new speaker wire as well.
