I live in the Communist Kalifornia, to avoid the unwanted attention from the polizei i need a quiet exhaust. My engine is mainly stock - all it has is greddy intake manifold, fmic, intake, and a 3" exhaust with a 4" tip. Any ideas on how to quiet this sucker down? It sounds like a damn mustang from the 60's. I'm new to the forums so please be patient with me. Thanks.

I'm running a magnaflow muffler with 3 inch pipe from the turbo back on my rb20 and my stock turbo is louder than my exhaust. plus it sounds good too.

What kinda exhaust do you have?

Get a 3" Cat, a 3" resonator, in there. You can also get a Silencer to go in the end of your tip.

Also if you want check out the QTP electronic cutout. weld one in before your cat and have it dump to atomosphere.

That way you can have your quiet exhaust and open her up if you wanna race.

I eventually wanna do that with mine.

im running a qtp 3.5inch el cut out and love it, i used to have a muffler on the back of the car to make it super quiet but ditched that and have straight 4 inch.

qtp makes great affordable cut outs!

So you have a 4" straight pipe AND a QTP cutout? lol

Ive got the Reinhard Dual Tip exhaust. Has a resonator within the piping. Then comes with removable baffles for the rear muffler section and silencers to boot. Its very quiet and mellow with the baffles in. The exhaust is pricey though. I got mine from FRSport.com

Cut off your muffler and put on a 3in-2.5in reducer and use a decent 2.5in muffler with a dual tip. That way it looks stockish and it'll quiet it down a lot. You might lose 1-5HP, but you can always up the boost.

Or just get a whole 2.5in exhaust off with a dual tip muffler. That'll cut your HP down 5-15HP or so but its a trade off for less tickets and a quieter ride.

I donno about you but I love my RB20. At stock boost its fairly quiet, and I have a 3in Invidia exhaust. It sounds like a tuned I-6, nothing close to a v8 and is 10x quieter then my NA KA.

Maybe you have some exhaust leaks? You might want to check all your exhaust connections for bag gaskets and loose nuts and bolts.

well, i really appreciate your input. very helpful information. i think a solution is already in the works - buddy sold me his 2.5" single tip for $80. I'll try that out - almost identical to what RustspecS13 has suggested. See in "K"alifornia its getting to the point where cars are being crushed, and i just love my car too much. hahaha

Just curious, is your car registered in cali? Because just having the rb in your car will get it cushed, if you get pulled over and you have to pop your hood they will know its not legal and still crush it.

Having a quiet exhaust will obviously help but if you run into a cop that checks every import car....

I'm running a SSAC catback and a custom downpipe, my car isnt that loud thanks to the stock turbo. Its mainly tho on how you drive, my car is fairly quiet while cruising but sounds like a bat out of hell when i crack the throttle.

yup. i know that could happen. i drive like my grandma so they won't pop that hood unless they have probable cause. i'll take them to the moon and back with lawsuits for poping it without reason. haha. they can't profile because i drive an import, otherwise i'll file a classaction for s*** like this and get rich - then make the rb and sr 50state legal (we will all put the mods on after we register and smog)

Yah, i'm really considering moving from this "wonderful" state. LA is the worst city ever. my only problem is - i surf and in florida waves are not year round like in cali. job situation and couple other things are keeping me planted for now.....

Thanks for the props, the degree was worth it - but finance is a boring career path. Should’ve studied engineering…Haha.

Good video, thank you for the post. Quite surprised at how quiet its sounds in the garage. I'm picking up an exhaust from a friend tomorrow - finally!!! So moving on down from a 3" to 2.5", and will throw a cat on there with a resonator. Later i will weld a dual tip. I know many people have talked me down on the cat part of this but i just can't sit in traffic with that exhaust smell. California is like a parking lot - always a traffic jam. I won't be adding any extra ponies anytime soon so the exhaust can be a 2.5" for now.

Here is the update. Got a 2.5" exhaust, put it on, and the car runs pretty quiet. Even when i put the "pedal to the metal" its not as loud. Very satisfied, but the exhaust smell is still horrible. Any ideas with that? Here is what i plan on doing. 1. Changing gaskets - manifold, turbo, downpipe/exhaust2. Sealing off the firewall3. Getting a high-flow cat (which will burn up pretty soon)4. Sealing shift boot inside the car.

Any other ideas? Thanks for all the help to all of you.
