Hello everyone, I am about to do the "Other" valve cover gasket (the one that requires the removal of the plenum) and figured I would do the hoses at the same time....My question is......(Drum Roll Please).......How much should I plan on spending on all the hoses? I saw Wes's list of part numbers and am curious what that turns into as far as dollars. Also, how much time have you spent doing this?

ThanksScott

So, some more searching shows that I don't have to remove the plenum.... A mechanic friend of mine looked it up in a Mitchel Manuel and it called for plenum removal and a ton of hours to do it.......Hmmm.

Honestly, a lot of them aren't as "specialized" as people make them out to be.

Buy some top-grade fuel line (I bought Goodyear) and some other assorted, good quality hoses, and order the rest from Joe. I did mine for $100 total.

"Look up SAE "R" numeric fuel grade hoses, you will find 3 that are suitable pressurewise, however only the most expensive and difficult to find will survive 10% ethanol for very long.

The FUEL hose used for oem may not be the most suitable since ethanol was not uses in Japan and so very rare in US in 1990.

The mantra is every hose you don't change because it looks kinda OK is one that will fail on the future...........a few fail every 7 years or 100k depending on ;ocal temperatures and ozone.

Which side are U doing? If left/drivers side then replace:2= Rear Cam plugs1=EGR Valve Gasket1= ThrottleBody Gasket (makes job easier when TB is removed)

Also may want to repalace 5-7mm Vacuum hoses on ERG Silenoid an Egr BPT and the ones on the hoses that are on the TB and always check and replace spark plugs if needed and re-gap plugs after removal. Also seal spark plug holes while working so U DO NOT DROP a screw into the cylinder. Clean all connectors and use DI-Electric when replacing connectors.

Why would you take the time to measure and regap plugs when replacing them with new buys you another 60,000 miles?

Thanks for all the reply's...I had a friend (Mechanic) do the easy side for me and traded some labor with him. Now the "Hard" side is leaking and rather badly. I was under the wrong impression that the plenum needed to be removed to do the job and figured I would do hoses while I was in there but if I don't have to pull it off "I Aint Gonna". I will save that project for the future. As for plugs, they were done about 6000 miles ago. Q45, you bring up a VERY important point about the fuel hoses.....Hmmm What do you do at the shop? Factory, Aftermarket?

Thanks again guys....Scott

If you go after market be sure you get the hose that is rated for fuel injection. The regular stuff will start leaking fairly quikly. Ask me how I know?

Brian-I believe you want SAE R9 or higher. Definitely not R7.Dayco 'GEN2' FI hose is SAE R9 rated per MSDS. Pep girls has that.

The problem with all hoses that see continuous fuel and fuel vapor byproducts is the ethanol and ethanol in the oil which then gets into all the PCV hoses.

The addition of ethanol increases the rigor way above oem designs.

SAE 30 R7 and R8 are easily penetrated by ethanol

SAE R9 is only satisfactory with ASTM Fuel C without alcohols as the test fluid is 50% isooctane in 50% toluene. SAE R9 will be 3-5 times worse if exposed to ETHANOL.http://www.goodyearbeltsandhos....htmlhttp://www.gates.com/common/do...m.pdf

SAE30 R10 must be used in the fuel tank or where gasoline ethanol is exposed to outside of hose.................unfortunately a leak often gets fuel on the outside of hose causing future failures.

Thanks Dennis and Jay. I have seen SAE 30 up to R9, and SAE 100 R9-R11.

The SAE 100 spec seems to utulize a coiled helical steel inner construction, so I am unsure if it will fit where some radiusing is required.

Any help from those who know? I do know I don't want to replace the devils again, so cost is not an object.

Anyone? Time is of the essence! Sourcing seems to be a challenge also. Third party American automotive parts retailers are like "Huh?" when one inquires.
