I put this question in technical because of the great mechanics here to answer a engine/ trans questions, If i put this in the general section I wasn't sure i get mechanic that knows .
Question
I have a 90 300zx and it's costing me a small fortune to maintain something always breaking and I was thinking of getting a 350z, but they are kind of pricey I saw a 2003 350z for $7k with 177k miles on it wows that's ready for the wrecking yard or a rebuilt.
My technical question how many miles like this one is about time to FOR A rebuilt ,I mean isn't IT scary to buy a car with 177k on it , The engine trans has to be wearing out by now. thanks

I bought my 06 350z with 165k on the clock. It was a one owner from a guy who averaged about 20k miles per year, clean car fax and no evidence of any collision or repaint work having been done, it's just a good honest used car. I passes on a similar car which had been through 4 owners had been repo'd and had half the miles. The milage is only half the story.

That being said there are tons of VQ's in Z's, G's, maxima's altima's, Trucks, etc with well over 200k on the clock. I know a guy that had to replace the engine in his 60k mile car after throwing a couple of rods. The problem with your Z32 is that it and it's parts are now 25 years old. Many of the parts are proprietary so availability is low and the prices are high, the Z32 also is an exercise in engineering for engineerings sake and everything takes twice as long to do. The Z33 is much easier to service in many ways add to that that the drivetrain in the Z33 is far more common so parts are far more available (granted the rev up and HR versions are a bit more rare). Don't get me wrong the Z32 really is a good dependable long lasting cars but nothing lasts forever and parts will age out, it's not surprising to know that in the course of 25 years the coil packs, injectors, ptu, cas and other high duty cycle parts simply wear out, any 25 year old car is likely to have the same issues only the Z32 parts tend to be more expensive and difficult to replace. Still cheaper and less parts to replace than a similar BMW.

My '05 has 178k on it and it's still a fine car. I've been the owner since 40k though so I know almost all of its history.

Evil is right in that miles are only part of the story. Up until last year I had a 65 mile commute to work, so even though I put a lot of miles on it commuting most of them were highway/interstate/expressway miles. I also worked nights and the car is garage kept so the paint is great too.

The big flag that I see on Z with as many miles as the one that you're looking at is that it's an '03 and doesn't have the CD009 transmission that Nissan started using in the Z in 2005. But even if the transmission in the car you're looking at needs work (or even replaced) if you're getting a good enough deal on it the savings might cover it.
