Application: 1990 Q45 w/ level ten transmission

To make a long story short, I was doing a simple drain and fill of my transmission today and over filled it greatly. Don't worry, I didn't drive or even start the car when I did this, it just started flowing out.

Q1: My overfilling it, but not ever starting or driving it could this have damaged anything? I just noticed it start to pour out of somewhere and I immediately drained it.

Q2: The "Home Brew" flush was mentioned by Q45tech and later used by elwesso [zerothread?id=76109 & zerothread?id=137129]

What doesn't seem to be clear in either thread is exactly how much fluid is supposed to be used on the last fill (empty transmission on last fill without draining again). The reason why it's not clear to me is because the FSM says transmission fluid capacity is 10-3/4 quarts. Yet it seems that when doing a simple at home drain and fill, you only fill 3-4 quarts. Am I right? Why is it that FSM says 10-3/4 quarts?

If possible, please explain in total dumba$$ lingo

There has never been a "home brew" flush procedure recommended by Q45tech. Indeed, he has cautioned against it every time it is suggested as being feasible.

The replaced amount is equal to the amount you drain, is not a flush, and assumes the level was correct intially. Fill to cold mark and adjust to fully warmed mark.

simple procedure as outlined in your original post with link to q45techs post. drain, measure amount drained, refill same amount as drained, run engine 2 minutes, repeat this procedure 5 times, and you have replaced about 80-85% of the old fluid through dilution. the entire system holds 11.1 quarts{94-96} and only about 3 quarts drain each time because lots of fluid is caufgt up in the torque converter and cooling lines and doesnt come out during the pan drain- if this is done every year, there is no reason to pay for a shop to use a fluid exchange machine, unless you believe in using a chemical to flush the transmission internals.as most places charge 100.00 to "exchange" the fluid using the machine, the savings of doing the drain/fill 4-5 times is a real money saver, and the $ saved can be used to purchase a great fluid such as RedlineD4 or Mobil 1,and do the change more frequently to help extend the life of the transmission.

Only one question remains... Why not? Sorry to say it (and no offense to dennis) but just because he does it one way doesnt mean theres not another wa.y Granted, going with how dennis does it you cannot go wrong... i digress

Anyway evan, heres the idea... The transmission holds like 11qts, however by draining the pan you only have access to about 3-4 quarts (really depends how long you let it drain).. The reason you do the multiple drains is so that you can go through 11 quarts..

I said in that post that you simply put in 3-4 quarts on the last post... BTW you have my phone number, why didnt you call me!!!!

what q45tech is cautioning about when referring to not doing a "home flush" is the common procedure some do on other types of cars in where they disconnect cooler return line and let fluid pump into a drain pan while refilling thru dipstick opening while engine running, this starves the rear planatery gears on a q transmission. a simple drain/fill repeated 4-5 times effectivly replaces 80-85 percent of the old fluid, which is plenty if the old fluid wasnt toast{ I do this every 12 months, with about 15-22K on the fluid} and so far with 166,500 miles on original transmission,it shifts beautifully-just got the external transmission filter from joe, will replace this soon to further aid in extending life of transmission.
