i was kinda bored in my math class today and was brainstorming on where to put subs in the interior of my 93 Q. i was thinking about gettin 1 or 2 8" subs, cut a hole in a piece of MDF and use that as an enclosure, then puttin the MDF in between the rear speakers where the storage box is. does anyone think this is a good idea? also i wanted to put subs under the rear seat but im not sure which subs/box to put there. suggestions?

Oh snap! Rex linked to my thread. BooYah

If you're looking to do something very unique I recommend putting a single 8in mid/bass driver in each of the front doors in place of the Bose Pod. A shallow driver with ~4~5in depth will fit.

I guess my problem with that would be that it would bounce off the rear glass and head straight for your ears (back seat would be worse). Might get a bit overwhelming and/or difficult to balance the sound properly.

nah, it'd be fine. As long as you cut off the 8s around or below 250hz you'd be good

Oka-y-y-y ... what is the point of having subs if everything below 250Hz is filtered out with some steep filter?

You might as well use a good 4" or 6" mid-range driver (and get the same effective result) with a smaller hole cut-out in the back!

I think the original poster would be better off finding a better location for the subwoofer he wants to use.

i agree wit youi should find a beta place to put some subsand as far as the sound bouncing off the rear windshield, i dont think id mind it, im not looking for high sound quality, just some head shaking bass

Ouch!

But, if that is what you want, then go for it!

No, I was talking about a low pass filter, not high pass. So everything BELOW ~250hz would go to the sub. For an 8in driver though, I personally would cut it off around 40~50Hz on the low end. Doing this would keep the driver from interfering with the midrange, and prevent distortion down low from over extension. Even if the driver could handle lower notes, I would use it for that. An 8in driver is in no way shape or form a SUBwoofer. It's a mid bass driver.

Heck, if you want a really nice system you could pair that 8in driver with a 15in sub and cross them over around 80hz. Use an active crossover system to make setup a little easier. This setup would allow you to fine tune the low end and mid low end seperately. The problem I've found with most sub systems is that the mid bass just completely over powers the low end bass. I really hate that. Mainly because mid-bass really only causes it to be loud, but it doesn't shake much. The opposite is true for low end.

Ah, yes, I misinterpreted your post. Sorry about that.

It is all relative ... in a car, a decent long-throw 8" woofer would be more bass than most car stereos have (whether factory systems or otherwise) - not all, of course, but most!

In a home stereo, it is an entirely different story of course - my subwoofer is an 18" Velodyne powered by its own 400W amplifier! It would be darn near impossible to fit that into a car!

Yep. The reason is Hoffman's Law. The reason your velodyne can have a "small"(relative to car amps) is that you give it more air space. The greater the air space, up until a point, the greater the efficiency will be.

Ex: 15in sub X has an efficiency of 89dB @1w/1m in a 1.25ft^3 enclosure. That same sub would have ~92~95dB sensitivity when placed in a ~5ft^3 enclosure.

I personally would sacrifice a little more space in the trunk if It would allow me to use a smaller amplifier.

That's alright. You're always correcting me. SO now it's my turn

JL is pretty expensive. I personally would never pay retail for it. Check out Ebay.
