Saw a TV ad for next week's US Top Gear and it looked like they had a Q45 (G50) in the clip. Anyone else see this? The episode will air Tuesday 2/19 at 8 or 9pm on the History Channel. The clip wasn't clear on how the car was being used...so not guaranteed if it will be on the show or not. I'll be tuning in for sure.

I heard about it. The title of the episode is "150 MPH challange". I'm trying to find a preview video clip but so far nothing.

Thanks for the head's up! DirecTV is showing a different episode in that time slot, but I checked the History Channel website and it confirms the time slot you mentioned. I just set it to record the whole series... then I'll cancel it once I know I have that episode...

+1 == something about driving a luxury car while having a globe of mice/rats near the drivers head.

Well at least it wasn't a Q appearing in an episode of Swamp People.

Does anyone know the year model? It looked like the governor kicked in at 140. I bet it was running a stock ECU.

It was a 94 model. I was a bit disappointed. But then again, I don't know what health the car was in. He supposedly had a 100 shot of NOS in it but it didn't seem to do much. I guess it's because he was near the governed speed. I thought I read that the stock ECU was governed at 150 MPH. Wasn't it?

I thought that it was at 149 from my memory. What I do know is that in 2001 I took my dad's 92' up to 145 and it was barely breathing hard. Now his had 90k on it at the time and it was completely in tip top shape thanks to his aftermarket warranty. I was chasing down an S class Benz on highway 101 south of Santa Maria in broad daylight and that car still had tons of pump left to go at 145. I think the guy said he only paid $1500 for it, he should have bought a nicer one for 3.5k and reprogrammed the ECU chip. They were really dissing the Q, but that is what happens when they get old pieces of junk examples.

Yeah... it was kind of depressing, but I agree - I think it was the ECU stopping it. At 150MPH, speed sensor error could easily cause that 10 mph issue... or tire size fooling it... loads of variables. Adam should have spent his cash on a NICO ECU instead of NOS. I want to drive the Bugatti Veyron!

I missed it last night :(. I had a friend message me who knows I'm big into the Qs and said "the Q is on top gear!!"

Hopefully I can find a YouTube clip or catch it some other time. If anyone sees a clip let me know!

Ya, they were obviously smart enough to put nice tires and bigger wheels on all the cars in the show, although they didn't mention it they were not going to try to get to top speed on a dry lake bed with the tires off a $1,500 car :). I was unreal how disrepecting they were, but obviously if that Saab 93 was running faster than that Q it was f-ed. My wife wants me to put one of those racing seats with the compeition belts into my passenger seat of the Q :)

:Welcome: to NICO King Charles!

The '96 is a bit of an odd duck, because it was the only year of the first generation Q45 with OBDII. A lot of stuff was eliminated in that changeover - including variable valve timing. As far as I know there's no aftermarket support in terms of an ECU or chip. Do you have any repair/maintenence history for the car? I would try calling Infiniti or checking with a local Infiniti dealership to see what has been done to it within their network. They can pull it all up by VIN.

I think you mentioned this Q only has 101K on the clock in another post? You should post some pictures... that's even lower mileage than mine!

Very nice deal indeed!!! As he said, there really isn't anything that is going to make it much faster. My suggestions, first do every single fluid in the car, transmission, power steering, brakes, rear end everything. If you have no paperwork on the car it might be worthwhile to replace the spark plugs, use only NGK double tipped platium, no Bosche, Champion etc. Once you have it tip top condition, it will be 2x faster than the idiot on Top Gear wtih the NOS.

Now that you have done that, time to look at the suspension. The top gear car handled like crap probably due to shot suspension. You can get Tokiko blacks or blues for the car and renew the ride. Last those old 15" rims are really holding you back. Start to search around for a set of 18" Q45 (3rd Gen) or 18" or 20" FX rims. These are pretty easy to find, try to got OEM if possible as they are going to be cheaper used and will be rock solid. NOw you can apply some top-notch tires and BANG, you will have a pretty fast, nice handling luxo sedan for super cheap.

And when you do fluids stick to synth, Mobile 1 at worst, Redline or Amsoil at best.

Yea not so much for speed I just like super smooth & efficient vehicles. I've got a pair of 18' Dub Bellagios in storage not sure If I want to resurrect them. I have no clue as to what kind of oil it's been running would a switch to syn be a bad thing if it's been on dino all these years.

Appreciate the input.

No, you can move to Syth no problem, that is a wives tale. Also same thing for all the other systems, just move to full Synth and don't look back.

Whatever Wes, you know that lumberjack would have cold CRAPPED HIS DRAWERS if he hit that 200 shot of Wet Nitrous (I thought the Q could only do a dry shot) @ 137 mph with a JWT ECU and hit that veyron top speed. They couldn't show that on TV. A Car that books for less than that veyrons tail fin going as fast. Yeah, they have no clue. Or do they? My NICO ECU rollin on 3 gear has hit 146. His majesty has chosen his year wisely if he is not into blistering speed and acceleration, but a Q must be perfect in order to achieve it's level of performance.

I've never seen the American Top Gear before. Seems kind of lame without Clarkson. I suspect that Q went 140 because that's how they wrote the script for the show. Kind of like the malfunctioning nitrous. Either that, or the car is in piss poor condition.

My 90 has 145k miles, and is bone stock except for gutted cats and a NICO ECU. Car does not feel even close to topping out at 150.

Impul, if they have any left.

Enjoy it for what it is. Suspension and brakes are about your limits.

Piss poor condition. Early 1990 are known to have 165 mph in them.

"Piss poor condition" was referring to the '94 in the TV show. I mentioned my own car as a counterexample; it easily hits 150 and seems like it could go quite a bit faster. I just haven't had the nerve to try it out yet LOL. 165 would not surprise me.

I don't know about piss poor condition. The vlsd still worked and on that gps you see how quick the speed was going up. Rutledge did comment about running straight pipes. And from what i read on nico site. That's a big no no. I had a 91 q with over 160k and that b**** still ran tip top. She was quick as hell! So yea they dogged the q bad. Which is why i watch the British version topgear compared to American version. Since i seen that program though I've been thinking about the first gen q...alot. Probably get one as a weekend driver and make my i30t a daily driver.
