okay - i searched the archives for stuff on the intake system, but -----

The 96 has a large complex air intake system to "tune" and change theintake noise characteristics This is all mounted behind the driver sideheadlight and grill. I've read bout over the years, and seen the K&Nconversion placed ahead of the MAF, and all the plastic removed.

SO one, how well does the engine sing being "unmuffled", andwhat is the two wire sensor in the horn behind the grill for. I remove itbefore or after starting it seems to make no difference....any examples or bragging about this available?

thx

I wouldn't disable stock CAI either. You need to read more posts.

K&N and Stillen PopCharger are biggest ripoffs since the turbinator and are targeted at the most gullible of consumers. Don't be one.

I meant molesting anything after the airbox... in my mind that means retaining the stock airbox with the stock filter.

You should hear mine. I cut... well got rid of all that sound baffling stuff and you can hear the difference. I dont know if it has any effect on proformance. I bet its still better then any non stock intake. I dig the sound.

I've gone that path (installing CAI) and shortly after (2 weeks) have removed it completely because of decrease in MPG (at least 2Mpg). Here is the link zerothread?id=130805 CAI sounds pretty cool, gives you "deceptive feel" of more HP - The colder the air the more adjustments are made to compensate for dense air passing MAF thus increasing demand for fuel - Good for racing - bad for daily operations If you want a noisy vehicle - get a diesel Cheers!

Thanks to all for the comments. Yeah the removal of the stuff ahead of the filter may make more noise, and keeping the air box is likely best. But,can someone tell me what the two wire sensor is for?????? BTW diesels are cool

thx

Yep!!! My car is setup the same way we setup yours, however, we had no choice in your case!!

Qtrip, where is this sensor your talking about, ive fully taken apart a Q45 and i dont know what your talking about, unless its something goofy for the 96. if you tell me more specifically where it is ill look it up in the 96 FSM

The stock air intake is well tuned for performance and quiet. You CAn increase air flow by removing the filter, all the bends, etc --so long as you still ram the air in from the high pressure area of the stock intake. BIG mistake to pull air from the engine compartment (hot, low pressure, dirty)

You can remove the sensor safely BUT you need to keep it plugged in. On some CAIs on certain Nissans (200SX SE-R comes to mind with a HotShot cold air) there is no room in the piping for a intake temp sensor. You just leave it ziptied to the harness still plugged in. Belive it or not ECU uses the IAT to adjust for diff ignition timing. If its 120 deg outside in the Mojave Desert, ECU will retard the timing so that the engine is less prone to detonate, in colder weather like the North Pole or Alaska, the ECU will adjust the timing back to its specified timing map for that certain intake temp.

OK, which is it? better fuel economy because the air is hotter, or worse fuel economy because the air is colder?

My K&N pulls air from the engine compartment, hense it is warmer. I believe Layla gets a little better gas mileage as a result. I am sure that the power is reduced as a result. I definitely get MAF failures much more, due to the filter oil. All it really does, is make a loud growl when I get on it. It actually makes people do a double take when I get on it.

I would suggest not putting one on your car. Stick with stock.

Thanks to all those who weighed in; I'll keep the stockstuff, llikely to mess things up just taking things out.

I'll just work on the back end...better exhaust note.
