The alternator idler pulley or belt tensioner on my 91 q45 just siezed poping my belt. First off I have tried everywhere and no one has one, is it listed in a different name? Second it has a pressed bearing, can I buy one of them and have it pressed in? And third where can I find one.? does any one have an extra one they want to sell and I will pay for overnight delivery. Thanks Mike

Order all 3 belts while you're at it, only makes sense to replace them all while you're in there.

Find a parts place with a machine shop, it has to be pressed in. The bearing is a standard size, they'll pop it out and measure it, match it, and press the new one in. (Do all three) Just don't lose the little dust cover washer thingie like I did.

This is a great idea. It will save your about $150, but may require a longer investment of time. I paid over $70 for the single tensioner from the local Infiniti dealership.

Here's a reply from Joe to a similar thread ...
jtesensky wrote:Your belt tensioner/idler pulley is one in the same. It has a pressed bearing and it has siezed up on ya. No worries though I have them for $36.41 and the belt is $11.39 (plus shipping) both are oem parts. You can visit us at http://www.infinitipartsusa.com or call us tomorrow at 1.888.216.5328-Joe

Um yeah, I got busted for doing that! I kept having dealers complain about us using the Factory shipping resources to sell outside of our local market. Don't you love all of those high-grossing dealers out tere???

Thanks !! Mine were just getting notchy, so I did this as a PM move, since at the time I had it apart for something else. Never even priced them... $70.00 :eek! I like Joes price better but mine is cheaper and faster... sorry Joe.

Just don't start confusing me with PMQ

Also, my technicians inform me that some of the bearings can be replaced by a press.

The same thing happened to me. I popped the bearing out and got a new one from NAPA for $13. I had 3 new belts that I was waiting to put on when so it all worked out.

Can you tell us what size the bearings are.....? My idlers are OK but I might buy some of the bearings and press in new ones if I get a chance.

Seems like Texasoil posted the bearing size, and had some for sale about 6 months ago...

Ok I got my idler fixed today and Napa has the bearings listed, you just tell them that you have a q45 and the year. They have a book to list them, just tell them you need the bearing not the pulley and if they get lost somewhere just give them the numbers I list below and compare the bearings out of your ride. They have two different types listed. The one I needed they didn't have in stock, so I had a buddy that works there use his micrometer and find me one that will. Here is the napa number for the smaller bearing (the one I needed) the number is ...... 6301-2ZJand the bearing is about 21.00. Thanks everyone for leading me in the right direction and I hope this helps other people when they have the same problem. Thanks againe

The industry standard identification fo rthe idler/tensioner bearings (for 90-95 Q45's--all versions) is '6301', which specs the internal dia, external dia, and width. There are numbers and letters AFTER the 6301 which identify the sealing arrangement--shields, seals, type of seals, elastomer type, metal used in bearing (steel, stainless, ceramic, etc.) The ones I have (10 on-hand right now) and '6301RS' which are neoprene full seals, and all stainless construction (and high temp high speed rated)

Not all '6301' bearings will stand the load, speed, or temp requirements of these Q45 idler applications. $21 each seems to be 'the standard' auto parts place price fo rthem.

I gotta tell ya, this will work! When my alternator idler pulley siezed, I had a friend with a machine shop simply press out the bearing. He cross-referenced it with NAPA and for $15 I got a brand new (well, rebuilt) idler pulley! Heck, he even sandblasted it (before pressing in the new bearing) and painted it black for me! :-)

Definitely beats $70-$100 for a new one.

Dayco sells replacement pulleys for the Alternator and Power Steering belt paths for $30 and change a piece on Amazon. They are part number 89134 and 89153 respectively. Strangely I was unable to find a replacement for the AC belt path other than OEM ($$$), which lead me here. I replaced the bearings in the AC and PS pulleys with a set of quality Japanese Nachi-Fujikoshi Quest bearings (6301-2NSE C3 BXMM) for $12.41 a piece on Amazon. I checked at Napa first but my local shop did not stock 6301 bearings. I must say that they are silky smooth compared to the old bearings and even the 6301-RS bearings that came in the Dayco pulley. Only time will tell which hold up best, but I'm betting on the Nachi's.

I also picked up a 12-ton shop press at my local Harbor Freight for $104 with a 20% off coupon and it made short work of removing the old bearings and pressing in the replacements. I'm sure the machine shop would have charged me less than what the press costs, but if I have the need to use it another time or two it will have paid for itself. They have a 6 ton press for even less that would likely do the job if all you need it for is pulley work.

Oh, BTW the original OEM pulleys contained Japanese NTN 6301LU bearings. Considering they lasted 25 years and over 150K miles that speaks highly for them. If I could have found those for sale I likely would have gone with those instead. In my case the alternator pulley's bearing had frozen and literally fell to pieces when removed, so I ordered the $30 Dayco 89134 pulley to replace it. The other two pulleys were still working but the bearings had some roughness, so I decided to replace both those and went the bearing route since I could not find an aftermarket AC pulley.

I just bought the bearing for the a/c pulley as it as no longer available at the stealership. Cost me about 7$ on eBay and is an exact fit replacement.
