Car: lots of unique hot rods, and customs, with modern engines, and a good truck to pull the trailer.

With gas prices, its actually cheaper to stay at home and build the car then it is to drive it.

Just kidding, sort of

LOL!!!!

That is a FABULOUS way of looking at it.. its way cheaper for me to drive my BMW than it is to drive my Q..

But of course, I'll throw my BMW in the garbage for the Q.

Well, maybe we all can catch up on that deferred maintenance that is always there.

Regarding the 7 series manual, did you know that the 7 series used in the movie "Transporter (1)" was actually a V12 with manual transmission? It was custom built for the movie.
Wow. Did not know that. I had assumed it was just a V8 735i and that the manual transmission was something available in France.

No such thing as a V8 735i as all were straight sixes.

Even the European only 745i was a twin turbo six. 740 and 750 are V8.

Wes, I lopped off half the pedal on my S13 when I went manual.

Used a manual brake pad as a template and chopped that bastard in half.

Could have sworn the 750 was a V12?

The E38 models were offered with either a five-speed automatic or manual transmission; the short-wheelbase 740i only came with a standard 6-speed manual, 740iL and 750i/iL had a 5-speed ZF automatic standard, 730d and 740d a GM-sourced five-speed automatic[1]. The engine variants in Europe were 725tds, 728i, 730i, 730d, 735i, 740i (4.0 and 4.4 L), 740d and 750i (with a 5.4 L 322 bhp (240 kW) engine, as was used in the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph).

In the Americas, the models were sold as the 740i, 740iL and 750iL. The 740i and 740iL share the same 4.4 L V8 engine. The 740iL is essentially a long-wheelbase 740i (hence the "L" in the model name). The considerably rarer 5.4 L V12-powered 750iL was only available as a long-body; there was no E38 750i in the US lineup. The 750iL was BMW's flagship sedan.

The 750il of the late 80s was definitely a V12.

Finally got the Q back home. Did some hacking today and test fit the clutch pedal..

Right now its dangling on a bolt, which I am actually going to be able to use a factory bolt hole that mounts the stock E brake to the firewall... The clutch pedal mounts to the firewall with 2 studs on the clutch pedal, and then another one up top to help with the forces when you press on the pedal.. This should simplify things pretty nicely..

I may leave the the stock automatic pedal as is. I have big feet and I dont think its too bad... The fit is really nice and its about where you'd want it seemingly, based on primary test fits. it looks kinda gay but Ill sacrifice functionality for looks. Worst case I will lop part of the pedal off and bend it over so it doesnt look like the big auto pedal!

The clutch pedal has a very limited area it can fit based on fitting the MC in the engine bay..

Brave man. I remember the terror I felt when I was replacing my damn clock. I don't think I ever want to go that deep again. You my friend, have gone MUCH deeper in there.

(Well, maybe I'll go in there again, but not on my Q. If I can get my hands on a junk Q, maybe.)

Glad to see that you're working on the swap again.

For the Q's firewall, did you have to hack off that bracket for the e-brake? I remember you saying that might have to.

yeah, but you have to leave the half on the left side (closer to the brake pedal) so you can still mount the BCM...

I am going to try and mount the clutch pedal today, I may not be able to because the firewall is like a 2 ply sheet metal, and my drill may not be able to handle it!

Early 750 were a SOHC V12 two valve design. Later ones are a DOHC 4 valve V8 (4.8L) with variable valve opening.

There is a link to someone overhauling one of the V12 posted by me or Q45tech somewhere in the archives.

Anyway, way to go Wes! Hope slow and steady gets it done. Take lots of pictures so there is a template for future brave owners.

That just struck me funny. Gave me a good laugh.\

Way to go Wes. I definitely think you should chop off some of that brake pedal, way too big. Bust out the sawzall.

This weekend I'll be taking the Q somewhere where I can work on it using the appropriate tools! Im hoping to get the pedals completely done, then put the dash back together...

Hi Wes. Great project and since I have my 90 Q interior apart except for the dash itself, I've been thinking about the same tranny swap; slow 2-3 shift and all that. Glad you are breaking ground for the rest of us.

I'll just throw out one idea I had about pedal placement. I was considering moving the gas pedal a little to the left so I could make the brake pedal smaller but still maintain a good pedal-to-pedal relationship.

Might work, might not

hang in there...............John

I think the gas pedal is a little too far right (or at least too close to the trans surround) as from the factory anyway, so I can see shifting the gas pedal left to go next to a narrower brake pedal working nicely.

Slightly related: I don't find that the pedal area of most cars is designed with shoe sizes of 13 and up in mind.

I got the clutch pedal mounted.. I think I will leave the gas where it is, the brake will shift right and the clutch will shift right as well..

I had to put the Q back together in automatic mode due to some circumstances beyond my control. In short, I had to have a car to drive!!!

Everything is on hold for now, but im going to continue to stock parts for D-Day..
