they wil free up only a few hp, depends on what you considder a waste fo money, they are pretty cheap but they yield very little in the way of hp gain, and if you live in an area with emissions testing well you might as well leave the cats in place or you'll be putting them back in for testing later anyhow

they're cheap 'cause it's just a piece of pipe.seriously, they work to tune your sound, after getting the cat-back exhaust. the hp gains are minimal at best. however, it's bang for buck, since they don't cost ANYTHING.

why?

sell your old cats to a scrapyard. they contain some precious stuff (don't know what), which they pay out to 200 euros (in Europe) or about $350.

Not San Diego nowadays. The DMV has gotten a lot stricter on shops that perform smog checks. They have cracked down on multiple shops within the past few months into 2009. I have a friend who owns a smog test/repair shop who used to doctor up smog certificates. 2 of the other people he knows just got their licenses permanently revoked by the state of california. Good luck looking for one.

And to the OP, cops are getting smarter about emissions control violations. My uncle has been with SDPD for about 10 years now. He said that an officer CAN (but not always will) have your car impounded for such violations. Consider that our economic crisis is also affecting your local police department. Tickets and fines will ensure they work another day!

I've got intake, test pipes, true dual exhaust on an 06 350z and the cops here in Toronto Canada pull me over and ticket me for noise pollution, even when I'm coasting at 40mph!

It is constant so I'm going to high flow cats and if I'm still getting pulled over I'm going to have to rip out the entire system and go back to stock!

I was just trying to give the dude a heads up as to my experience here in Canada, maybe he would have the same problems? I'm new to this site I thought people were supposed to be friendly?

How much are silencers and how much hp do you lose?

Why don't you show him how easy and practical it is, Richie? Let's see you post a DIY for it.

*edit* You'll have to excuse Richie, the unofficial NICO Tool. He rants about everything talking like he knows everything there is about the 350z (1700 posts of bullsheit and counting). Beware of his advices because most, like the last one he gave you, are worthless.

Seriously Richie stop being a d!ck to the guy. He posted some actual information (rather than talking out of his a**) and was discussing a remedy for his problem.

To the OP. I would seriously avoid going with test pipes while living in CA. It will bring you nothing but trouble. You could try hi-flow cats, but I don't even know if those are legal in CA.

That thing doesn't look like it would do you any good. Looks like it might be applicable to civics and miatas. That cup will not silence a 350z with test pipes and a true dual exhaust.

I doubt it's enough to suppress the added noise from the test pipes. My RS*R came with a set of silencers. They did very little to tone the noise down. They look like this:

Did you read the whole post that guy made Richie? If so then look at the results/consequences of doing that. "Loss of power". If thats the case then there is no point in putting on exhaust power adders if you are just going to rig some crappy "home made" silencer and stuff it in your exhaust.

I think what aris meant was that there is no point of having an exhaust as a power adder if you're gonna stuff it with silencers that would result in a loss of HP.

yea but the silencers help you avoid tickets and you can take them out real quick when you need the power.

Any sound clips of how your car sounds? Or is there anything similar to how it sounds on the internet? Just curious, it doesn’t seem like it would be considered that loud or maybe police are just crazier about that stuff over by where you live.

If your going to get test pipes make sure you get the high flow cat ones. I had the straight test pipes on my Z and it got really whiney over 3500 rpm. THey test for emissons were I live so I just put the cats back on and my Greddy Evo2 exhaust sounds much better.

a general rule for those asking legitimate questions in thtis thread, richie aka R350Zz33, is not the one you want to listen to, he likes to try to help even when he is himself helpless, you'll be better off ignoring his posts, responding to him just keeps him going
