Ok, I just got a mod-chip today for my ps2. I took my ps2 apart and holy crap....this is like a million times more difficult than i thought. Taking apart the ps2 wasn't hard....but soldering wires onto those little tiny itsy bitsy circuits? HELL NO.

Is there *anyone* who is an excellent solderer and can do this? Preferebly in the Atlanta area, but I'd consider shipping it too. I have a Version 2 PS2, and the mod chip I bought was the DMS3 V2.0. Any help??? This is driving me nuts. I'm scared to solder such tiny wires.

Torrey, its not hard to do, just make sure you use a low wattage solder+soldering iron combo. If its too hot, it will burn up the modchip's circuitry. Remember, wires go through the board, and get soldered on the underside. (This is only if you haven't found someone to do it for you yet)

Exactly....or better yet take it to a Sony authorized repair center to see if they will do it. I'd do it for ya but I'm in Texas. I fix Tv's all day.

Do you think a sony authorized repair center is going to mod a ps2? I'm pretty sure sony doesn't like modchips too much...

I had read somewhere about a cd you download and burn then boot it in the ps2 and it unlocks the security and then you don't need a chip. I donno, maybe it doesn't exist, maybe it didn't work but i remember reading about it.

nah, you can't burn anything to a disc and expect a stock ps2 to read it. You can buy swap cd's for 20 bux it comes with this little plastic grabber.

The plastic grabber grabs the metal bar that opens the tray without reseting it. The disc lets you put in any ps2 copied or import. Thats what my friends did with tokyo extreme racer 3 when it first came out in japan along with that one fighting game with link in it

We ARE a Sony authorized repair center. It only has a year warranty anyways. So if its out of warranty I'd do it.Not under warranty silly goose!:pface

There is an authorized sony repair center here in town, but I didn't think they'd do it because technically it is illegal....regardless of warranty (and yes, mine is well out of warranty).

As far as soldering the wires on the backside of the board goes, you can't. The way the ps2 board is layed out, it is so compact, they don't use solder on the backside....the chips are intigrated right into the board and use in-board circuitry to connect everything. In fact, the directions tell you what side of the board to work on, and there are actually wires that need to be soldered to *both* sides of the board. What a pain in the ***.

I'm thinking I'll attempt it, but I need to buy me some better tools to do so. Like a magnifying glass, and a really really really really fine tipped soldering iron. I'd still much rather have someone else do it though.

It is real. I have something just like that. The kit comes with two boot discs and a special flip top cover. One disc is for dvd games , one disc is for the cd games. It plays burned games , imports , anything. The thing really cool about it is that I can play burned games online. I paid 50 bucks.

Oh shiat. I though the ps2's mobo was like a regular computer where you could actually stick wires *through* it. Suxorz...

To give you an idea, here is the installation for my mod chip and my PS2 http://www.mod-chip.com/dms3_v2.htm

The entire motherboard is probably only 6"x6". So you get the idea of how tiny these connections are.

They sell a variety of chips on the net. I bought mine from http://www.mod-chip.com, and they have other chips besides the one i bought. I got mine cuz I didn't want to mess with any swap trick garbage. I just want to put a disc in and play.

BTW...a friend from work claims he can do this for me. I'm gonna bring my ps2 to work tommorrow and have him take a look. He claims "it's easy"....we'll see.

I bought it from my friend. He is crazy into the newest trends of console gaming. It is called Swap Magic. I bought it because I didn't want to go threw the trouble of frying a few motherboards. LOL. Also with a Mod chip , you can't play burnt games online. There is a swicthable one (on/off) so you can play legit games online , but that is no fun. The swap discs work great. I can even play 8-bit nintendo games with a nes emulator disc. It has 600 nes games on it. I don't think a mod chip could do that. But that is old school now. I've had it for at least 1.5 years. All I can say is that Kaido Battle is freaking awesome!! but there is something new that I just bought. 160GB HARD DRIVE KIT!!!

The mod chip I bought claims that it automatically puts the chip in "sleep mode" when playing online so that online games *do* work. I bought the top-of-the-line mod chip so that I won't have any worries about playing anything. I'm paying the price for installation though LOL.

Hey guyz l00ks like a found a nice discussion.. I ve been modding systems since the original psx.. To tell you the truth one of the best inventions they've done is the flip top case with swap magic discs. Some mod chips play 90% of the games others play everything except ea games. Now, torry Its a good idea to do in depth research into what your buying before you buy it.. The chip you bought is nice. I the most reliable and compatible chip right now is the apple chip.. Dunno its been some weeks since an install..Check the forums like this one..I have also been repairing for some time.. The early version ps2 u0 u1 u2 will most like have a faulty laser soon after installing your mod chip..I had this happen a lot after installing numerous neo and neo keys and other 25+wiring chips Your best bet is to trade that system in and check your local game store for a later version. V4/5/6 .. I'd go with the flip top swap magic combo or better yet the no solder chip just an internal plug in.. I don't know if mod-chip.com is still up and running. .you can check mod-chipkitz.com or richspsxparts.com for added links.. But whatever you do ditch the early version system. Or you'll regret it in repair cost!!

mod-chip.com is still up, cuz that's where I got this chip from. A guy at work says he can do it for me, so he's gonna install it for me. You think my laser is gonna go out soon? I heard that if you always play your ps2 layed down flat (as opposed to upright), that it lasts *much* longer. And I've always had my ps2 flat except for about 2 months of it's life.

I'm gonna take my chances that it won't go out anytime soon and go ahead and get this chip installed.

That is a misconception. Once you are at the point of putting your ps2 vertical your laser has to work harder to read the disc. You are putting more parts at risc of going.. Motors, spindles, etc.. It was a great idea for the design, something new!! But, regardless once you're at this stage you are better off trading the system in before you can't trade it at all. If your system isn't working in the horizontal position then obviously there is laser wear.. How long do you think this system will last now using more of the laser to search and relocate code.. TRUST ME, trade it in now for a v.5 or higher!!!!!!!

No....I'm saying that I've never had problems with mine. Mine works just fine in both positions. I am saying that I have never use it vertical *because* it increases the ware on the parts. It will work just fine vertical though.

Ok. Misread you there.. I would still consider the trade-in , being you can get one so cheap now, you're better off trying to sell the chip and sell the system you have and try to get a used version that will last you till the arrival of the new system in 2 1/2 years.. One more thing, I haven't checked for games in some time.. Do you have anylinks for some good downloads or do you newsgroup it like I used to.. Just curious I only have about a dozen games in my possession due to countless relocations and selling most of my stuff off. I want to start again.. Anyleads man, or for that , any trades??

Well, as of right now all the games I have are bought NTSC-NA games. The post office has a copy of GT4 Prologue for me (I have to sign for it sometime so I can pick it up). That is the main reason I bought the mod chip.

Well ok then.. Sounds great I had an expansion of gt3 . It was great .. I would race my friends' hooked up skyline and gt-1's versus my little toyota pod.. That **** was funny.. THAT is where a mod chip will pay off.

Yeah, I see...the only game I really even care about is gran turismo. I have the japan version of GT1, US version of GT2 and GT3, the toyota GT4 demo (which I just bought off ebay), and the japan version of GT4 Prologue which is currently still being held at the post office. As long as my ps2 plays those games, I'm set.

As for the GT1 version I have....I had a first version ps1 that you could do the swap trick already without any type of mod chip. But right now, if I want to check out anything on GT1, I'd have to dig up my ps1 and a copy my copy of tohshindin to swap and play gt1 :) I bought GT1 before they ever announced it coming to the U.S. :)

I have had the problem with the disc read error. If it does happen to your PS2 Tech tv has a repair tutorial on their website. I haven't tried it yet but if anyone needs I will try to post it soon.
