Ok, ok....I have been on this kick lately. Chuki fog lamps in the mail, sleepy eye head lights done. Removed black stripe sticker and fixed a few of the paint goofs (still looks like crap, but getting better). Wheels. Lowered (Nismo S-Tunes thank you very much). Now I want to get that O-So-JDM propped hood look. I have read that all one needs to do is to unbolt the hood and throw some washers in there to act as spacers at the hinge. How accurate is this?

BTW: I'm not a ricer. My CA18DET will be in the mail soon;)

I think he means the look that cars with hoods that hinge from the front have, when they've been popped. Not sure if you can follow that, I'm not even sure it's right...Picture the part of your hood closest to your windshield, now imagine it jacked up like an inch or so. Looks ghetto doesn't it? Yeah, not sure why you'd want your car to look like the hood doesn't fit right but hey...

I like it and don't think it is stupid. I read on RX7Club.com that a guy tested this and got an average of a 10-12 degree drop in ambient temps under the hood because of the suction effect of the cowl-like profile. Coupled with the sleepy eyes, I think that a signifigant drop in temps. can be expected under the hood, as well as making a nice visual impression.

The ghetto cheap way to do it1. get longer bolts2. get 4 spare lugnuts3. unbolt one hinge4. insert lugnuts between hinge and hood5. insert longer bolts6. repeat for other side

I'm pretty sure this is what he's talking about...

What it's supposed to do is direct hot air out of the engine bay. The pic is of Aerodyne's FC, and they sell custom hood brakets for the FC. Apparantly the FC has different hinges than most cars and can't just use washers as spacers. But I'm pretty sure that's all you need to do on the S13. Might need longer bolts if you slap too many washers on, but that's about it...

i agree, ive seen this done on a gs-r and he also said it was a big help in lowering engine temps. Try the washers and see if those work out first

I think lug nuts will be a bit extreme. And yes, that pic is of what I speak.

Looks ricey to me. There are better ways to dissipate heat then keepin your hood open like that.

I mean it's so......ghey...

Yeah, The washers should work. Its the best way to release heat for cheap. My boy did to his car. Its not as high as the picture though.

I think it would be aweome if someone designed a motorized one. So it opens at a certain speed, like all those motorized rear spoilers on Porsche's. Or maybe I'm just stupid...

OMFG, you have got to be kidding me. I hope this is a crazy dream. Go to clubsi I'm sure your vinal clad brothers will bea able to help you on that. Cooler engine temps, whatever man. If you have a problem with overheating you need to fix it. I may be out of line but this is stupid Mr. I have a ca18det in the mail soon. Revolting

Spec, I have seen LOTS of RACE cars with this setup, you are totally confusing this with flip forward hoods. It still opens from the front, the back is just raised 1 or 2 inches to draw air out of the engine compartment. It works VERY well and is VERY cost effective.

it does lower the temp inthe engine compartment. i was just reading about it last week. i'll try to find it....

since your going to prop the hood up and can also take the weather striping off too. there just held on by clips, at least the s14 do. it will make a larger existing opening and you can use fewer washers. unless your going for the ricer looks.

Even I, hater of rice...will probably do this. I mean really, anything to keep the air flowing through my engine bay is a GOOD thing. I have a stock bumper, an intercooler that covers half the radiator, and a black grille in front of the intercooler, across the bumper opening to hide the IC. You can imagine not much airflow will be happening in my engine bay. I think either this, or busting out the sawzall is the best option. Just think, cooler intake temps, lower water temps, the A/C would probably work better...its a win win situation at the expense of looks (yeah, as if I care...I just tried to rub a scratch flat with my knife blade for crying out loud)

yea, this isn't somethign to cure overheating engines, its something that lowers your overall engine temp for better performace, and who cares how it looks as long as it helps

sup all, had to chime in. Yes, it will work. have done it myself on other cars but you have to be carefull.

there are safety hooks on the latches that hold the hood in place incase of an accident. if you raise the hood above these hooks, guess what happens if you get in a front end collision, that hood will slice through the windshield.

just be carefull and don't prop it up too much unless you can modify those hooks

Who cares if it makes you look like a ricer. It helps your 240 run better and thats what really matters. People are so worried about being a ricer they limit them selfs, do what ever tf you wanna its your car. And if ou excuse me i think i'm gonna go put that giant Gundam Wing vinyl on my 240... :oface lol

Word. I've seen that done on plenty of J-spec cars also. Some of you need to be educated before your write on how ricey you think it is or looks. And here I thought there was a sticky about not being a troll, and flaming people for no apparent reason, on these boards.

ITs OK if you dont like it, but to call something with a clear & obvious function RICE is just wrong. IF you want to call your next-door-neighbors civic rice because he has a huge wing & screams about downforce go right ahead. Same for his air-smoothing bodykit, or his neons that do nothing but look nice.

BUT this is a simple and inexpensive way to reduce your underhood temps. It is VERY popular with drifters in japan because of the heat that builds up when you are moving sideways. I have seen people simply pop their hoods(to the safety latch) but that has its obvious dangers.
