Heres what my boss had to say this morning."Not sure, but I know there is a lot of activity to zone the ocean for different uses such as Wind Farms which will limit areas for fishing – mostly commercial.
Recreational fisherman have not been represented at these types of meetings as they do not have a lobbying group or are not well organized. In many instances the recreational target is the day party boats as this catch is not reported and they take significant quantities of fish. The new salt water licenses are supposed to help track some of this catch."
From what I gather, the jobs that are attached to the proposed ban will be lost. Things like fishing on the great lakes, catching salmon in Alaska (I better hurry up my vacation) and the sport fishing of cobia and other game fish in Florida and the other gulf states. Unfortunately, recreational fishing is lumped in with the business fishing, and thus, you (the public) may lose your chance to go fishing for fun.
Personally, I think its going to turn into more of an accountability issue. I don't think that fishing will be ultimately banned, but I do think that the businesses (day boats, game fish cruises, shark fishing, etc) that operate will have to account for their catch more thoroughly and the reprecussions for misrepresentation will be much more harsh. Probably up to the stadard of commercial fishing, which- believe me- is TIGHT. I am in support of this option, if it ends up being the case.
