Awesome! Did you get the J-spec console for it? I've been pondering getting the J-spec center w/ DV/Navi unit and getting someone to switch it to English.

That's the ultimate aftermarket setup. Looks OEM, and updated. That screen fits perfectly. That would be real nice on a G50

I didn't get the J-spec console since it would be more hassle for me to buy stuff from Japan than design a system here. But if you success in switching to English, please let me know.

Cool. I've talked to some people and they think it would be easy, just like reconfiging a computer. But the JDM unit has some buttons with kanji characters on it Anyhow, I really like what you did.

Oh I thought you were talking about just using the LCD.. you're talking about using the whole config? would that accomplish what we want to do? What does the console from the presidents do.. Do they have nav and stuff already... It would seem like you would just want the console not the entire system... it's in japanese and probably doesnt have all the functionality?

I thought you were talking about just using the LCD, but maybe I'm missing something

You're right. It's really not practical to convert a regular system to factory NAV system. It would involve a lot of stuffs like the screen, NAV central unit, GPS sensor, and the last but not least- wiring harness. A friend of mine has a 2000 LS400 wanted to convert to a factory NAV system. He bought the screen, central unit, and sensor for about $1,500. But then the dealer asked $1,000 for the wiring harness, and $3,000 to install the system. Too costly, he has to return the NAV system back.Using the J-spec screen to display info from a computer would be a better idea than to convert the whole system.

I wonder how much we could get the screens for off of yahoo jp auctions.. Perhaps out of a parted out Q...

The fit would be perfect...

Man I love the carputer.. I just hate the idea of putting an aftermarket deck in my Q.. They just look so disco, and non OEM quality... The carputer lcd fills the double din gap perfectly, and looks very OEM and updated stylish.

I've always said if you look at the G50 presidents, they look just like a modern car.. The dash is still curvacious enough to be modern, just needs the screen to compelte the look.

Same goes with the Y33

The Y33 uses the same HU as the G50, so everything he does should be mostly the same...

BTW nice wires inthe passenger side, it looks like my car!! :)

Wrong again! They are different, but they are both Double DIN.

Really nice car! Great project.

I've always wanted to do a carputer setup. One of my goals was to have live data acquistioning via consult. Quite unlikely unless you own a 300ZX!

Did you design that GUI yourself, or were you able to find an Infiniti skin on the net?

Here's my rendition of an HG50 with a carputer:

I'd want to stick the computer in the trunk (probably under a fiberglass box... behind an amp or something of that sort). Then just have a wireless keyboard in the glove compartment and a touchscreen LCD. Anywho, haven't looked at the idea in a long time, but I remember there was a shatload of great sites out there to gain info off of.

Miniman, that is tooo cool! Even if it is way below the sight line (just llike JDM Presidents with LCD screens).

Please work on this before your other modifications! With thin notebook components and newer shock isolated hard drives, GPS and such should be a snap. Continous readout and graphing of ATF, coolant temperatures (with appropriately located sensors).

Yikes, I am getting excited. Must take a cold shower now, fellas.

That's what I'm talking about. If we could flip-flop the A/C, the computer would be closer to sight line.

Actually, the location of the double DIN head unit in the HG50 Q's center console isn't TOO bad, even for mounting a screen. Ideally, you could cut the separator between the climate control head unit and audio head unit, and move the cc controls to the bottom, and the screen up top, and fabricate a new separator and recover the center console so it all looks oem, but that's quite a bit of work! And you gotta imagine if your touch screen is in the same position as your existing audio head unit, the touch-screen buttons would be in the same area-albeit they can be much larger-and so using the system while you're driving won't be that big of an issue....

Say you cut a rectangle around both the climate control and the double din HU/LCD. Then you pulled it out and rotated it 180 degrees and stuck it back in... I wonder how good you'd be able to get the leather (cut lines) to look afterwards?

I was just reading in the general forum about a program which should work with the VH45DE to attain LIVE diagnostics/measurements via consult! Total cost would be around $100 for the necessary software and hardware!

Note, I amputated both shifters in both pictures (blocked the view, lower 1")... I should be able to stick the original in if anyone would like to see that though.

I found that Infiniti skin for MediaCar from http://www.mp3car.com. It's a great site.

Remove the AC control into the bottom would be a realy great idea since it has the same width as the doulbe-din HU. Minimal modification for doing that. I'd do mine the same way if my Y33's AC control wasn't too wide.

The current setup is in the trunk. I might get a ITX mobo and move into the car later. I'm currently using a microATX mobo with an inverter. Will upgrade to an DC-DC supply soon. I'm still searching to see if which one is the best. Any recommendation?

Do you have NAV on yours? If so how did you get it installed and working?
