Finding the time for anything project related is a bit of a challenge nowadays, huh!float_6969 wrote:So I FINALLY started working on the project again. I got all of the rust in the front fenders fixed, painted the engine bay, and installed the CA motor, freshly rebuilt trans with a taller 5th gear, and a freshly rebuilt helical differential.
I still have lots of rust to fix, but most of it's minor.
I am going to post all pictures on the first post so that this thread is easier to follow.
Yes, I fixed it myself. The pictures don't really show how crappy it looks. I don't have a whole lot of welding experience myself, but it's not hard to figure out either. If you have access to a MIG welder, it's not too bad to do. I basically just cut/ground out all of the rust that had gone all the way through, cut out a piece of metal from a junk hood that they had lying around the shop, and used a bunch of tack's to weld it in. Then I primed it and painted it.Woods Crasher wrote:cars looking great. Did you fix the rust in the front wheel well yourself? Was it a hard thing to do? My s13 has rust in the same spot and it's worrying me. I don't have any welding skill and I'm afraid of what it's going to cost.
Thanks a lot for the great information.float_6969 wrote:Yes, I fixed it myself. The pictures don't really show how crappy it looks. If all you have is surface rust, and it doesn't go all the way through, I like mar-hyde's rust converter. It actually turns the rust into a primer/sealant. That means that once it dries, you just pain over it. I got it from O Reilly's. Here it is on 3M's website.
