If I get the full headers/exhaust from PPE with high flow cats will that fix my P0420 code? Thanks!
It should, as the P0420 is a low efficiency threshold DTC...just means your cat is not cleaning the exhaust to the 92% threshold. The M56 is notorious for throwing this code after it reaches higher mileage. If you decide to go this route, it is recommended that you also tune the car since you are radically changing the stock set up.

As stated above make sure you know what's causing the p0420 code 1st, make sure no other stored codes too. Sometimes could just be a o2 sensor, bad spark plug, headgasket, etc etc. Don't assume all p0420 is just the cat.
You'll be spending thousands on a new exhaust. Around 2k on just the headers and near that much more for install if not doing yourself

Does anybody know whether we need to add a heat shield above this PPE exhaust?

The OEM Y-pipe has a fully wrap-around heat shield. PPE has none.
Did the OEM heat shield protect the transmission or transfer case?
Or was it just for occupant comfort to reduce hot seats?
It had to be there for a reason.

No heat shields as there is almost no room for it. Mostly all aftermarket headers for various brands do not include shields. It’s something for OE use mostly and comfort

The only things which positively need shields are the primary cats. Those are mostly to protect the outside world from the heat, park on dry grass without them and your car could look like a wildfire victim (and you might well start one). The pipes and rear cat don't hit those sorts of temperatures, so the shields aft of the main cats are mainly to prevent hot feet.

For OE yes, PPE does not run a primary cat only a secondary as a option

The rear cat will get hotter than normal when running without fronts, so if you have one it should be shielded. Without it, you really don't need anything.
