Yes for your purposes a flush is a good idea. Since a transmission replacement will cost about $3K, you should be willing to spend a few hundred trying to avoid / delay it.

The pan holds maybe 6qts of fluid, while the Torque converter holds another 8-10. So dropping the pan is necessary for changing the filter, but is not an effective way to change the fluid, since only 40% of the fluid sits in the pan.

There is some debate about the order, flush then then filter or filter then flush. But if you flush you MUST filter.

"The pan holds maybe 6qts of fluid, while the Torque converter holds another 8-10"......?

Nissan/J/Q pan hold 3 quarts and the rest of system holds another 7.5 quarts.

Yes drain all that old crap and replcae the filter. Make sure to get any and all sludge out of those line so that everything is clear and clean. I had the slight hesitation when transmission would shift from third to fourth. Had the lines cleaned, new filter, and new fluid. Then after another 10,000 miles did it all over agai. You would not believe how much more sludge was at the bottom of the pan. Anyways, all this said and my transmission is shifting so smoothly now. Absolutely no hesitation and firm crisp clean shifts everytime. Might be a bit of a pain, but its worth it to me to spend a few hundred now and get more miles out of the transmission. My car is creepin up on into 150k and everthing is still original as far as engine and transmission are concerned.

So is the best thing to do is get a flush and then drop the pan and change filter???? Is there any way to completely drain the lines to get out all the old crap?

Also, are a flush and "line cleaning" one in the same or different??

Pretty much the same. I am not saying that you will have the same results that I did, but its worth the try. My transmission seemedn to be doing the same thing that yours is and now my problem is completely gone. Everytime I drive the car now its feels weird, as I am so used to the hesitation that used to be there. But like I said, my problem is gone and the transmission shifts so smooth and fast without any hesitation at all, at any throttle range. I am alot harder on the car than my wife is and she is the primary driver, but it was a night and day difference by the time I did the second transmission service to it.

Ok..... I am going to take it in for a transmission flush as soon as I order the transmission filter from scottsdale...... When I go for the flush, would it be good for me to go get it done and have them put the filter in at the time, or would it be OK for me to take it home, and replace the filter. If so, how much fluid does the pan hold??

Just have them do the line flush, and change the filter at the same time. It will be alot easier and less mess for you. Also you may want to get a new pan gasket just for the heck of it. The cost is so small, that it is just worth it for peace of mind. As for the fluid amount I think its 3 to 4 quarts, but dont quote me on that. Hope that you experience the same results that I did.:D

Ill do that, but.....

I checked the level today, and it seems to be too high... could this possibly be the cause to all this madness

Yeah, all that work

I have been pre-occupied..... And instead of getting those lines checked, I think Im going to do a flush instead, since it needs to happen anyway.... That should happen next week, once I get home.....

Thanks for the concern :)
