So I've been talking to this guy whose selling a 1989 R32 GTS-T Skyline. Now the guy has the car registered and has a GA title for the car in hand. His story is that he used to live in Seattle and he got the car shipped from Vancouver. With the car being registered and titled, if it passes emissions, is insured, and meets safety regulations would it at least be STATE legal to drive and would that be ok although its not federally legal? Would the risk of having the car taken be too high and not worth the money spent? I've searched every where and can't find an answer for my situation. All sites talk about importing it from japan, but thats not a step im taking since the owner already has it here in state. I've seen a few R33 GTRs as daily drivers and has that just been out of luck they haven't had it impounded or could i really well off with this right hand drive all stock R32 GTS-T? Soon I will be calling the DMV in hopes i can get some answers from them too. I really appreciate any answers or recommendations especially from anyone with experience with owning one in Georgia.

No such thing as state legal. The laws that the car violates are federal. You will be in violation of those laws and driving and keeping the car will be based upon luck not a little piece of paper from the state that they issued because they were incompetent.

Thanks for the response. Well as said since it would honestly be over looked by incompetent state workers, and id be violating federal laws well how exactly does such prosecuting go under way? Like if i get pulled over for lets say running a light and the officer asks for licence and registration how would anything in relation to the vehicles legality come up if i have the paper work that is asked for? Are there just certain cars black listed and officers keep an eye out for? Just wondering because at different events and meets ive seen skylines and talked to the owners and they tell me they use it as daily drivers, but they're not heavly modded other than exterior/interior work really and the motor remained stock. Im starting to give up on it but knowledge doesn't hurt.

You could go for years under the radar. It's just luck. It would likely be ICE that comes after you if anybody, not a local authority. If and when that happens you will just be one more story about a car being destroyed and your investments in it being money, time, and love all gone.

That makes sense very good points you bring up. With all those stories it seems that all of them are heavily modded and flashy, that just seems to stand out more and catch a hell of a lot more attention. This is just so frustration, I have the money in hand and my dream car so close to me, but legally i can't own it. How does ICE even become aware of such cars? I know vin fraud a MAJOR thing to look out for with imported skylines from sketchy importers so thats a major thing to keep an eye out for. Its so tempting, but i just don't want to face legal issues later on. GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH :/

When I lived in NC I bought a Skyline from a guy in SC.
It was "grey market" but I never had any troubles with the law.
I could not register it in NC because the state did not recognize the vin. They even sent an inspector to my home to check the car out .. pretty funny story. Basically they did not pass the inspection so i had to register it in SC.
Anyways, thats a shortened version of my story.
Not sure how similar GA and NC vehicle laws are, but I was fine.
As with any situation, there are many factors that play in to it, so decide for yourself.

Thank you AyoDaesu thats helpful. If i do check out the car im gonna check the vin numbers see if they match up. I wouldn't have to go through that tho since the car currently has a GA title already and has been registered would you say thats one less step for me. I think i may end up setting it up a track car or use it for drift events. He's asking $15,000 for it, which around here is the cheapest i've encountered one for. Do you still have your skyline?

The funny thing with my old Skyline is that it had 2 different vin #s. The original still on the firewall and another 1 stamped along the door sill. Still not sure where that 1 came from lol.
Im sure its a grey market vehicle as well so vin #s matching doesnt really mean anything.
I sold my Skyline 3 - 4 years ago.
