1) mine were from Tribal Fusion, also.

2) I am glad I brought this up, apparently it was an issue.

3) I am very pleased with the mods response time, and retract all previous statements I have made about you. I am very impressed, and thank you.

4) Keep up the good work, and maybe I can come to AZ and come to one of these 'meets', or you could host one down here in Pittsburg, KS before I graduate (don't worry about where it's at, you won't care).

It is getting worse!!!!!!!! I just had a monster.ca ad show up when I clicked on a thread. It was one of those timed ads that give you the option to skip and continue onto your intended page. You guys have sold out.

Wrong.

They're NOT coming from us, there's a piece of code (either in a sig or in a recent banner).

Chill, we'll find it.

Cripes, you'd think we implemented those contextual ads that make the text into links...

LOL. This is pretty funny. One of NICO's major draws is the popupless environment. It's interesting to see people's reactions.

Hahahaha, I was just playing around. You guys seem to have a very strict policy towards advertising on the site, so I know you wouldn't intentionally have gay screens and windows pop up. But in all seriousness, whoever came up with this code is a genius.

Well, here's how seriously we take it:

I was taking a "mental health" day... needed to get the hell out of the office, so I was across town, wandering a scrapyard and a wrecking yard.

Matt called me and said, "We're getting popups", so I drove all the way back across town, an hour, to get back to my office.

So, yeah.

How did they do it? (Generally LOL. Not that I'd use the info. On Nico at least )

Haha..That would be the sh**!...don't see it happening anytime soon though. Just for the record though mods...that's a whole 2 members so far that would show up. Back on topic somewhat, what's a GOOD spyware/adware scanner that you guys would recommend? I get F'n popups everywhere and the Windows popup blocker does absolute di**! When you're pimpin' the 56K, they actually slow down the "surfing" process to load the stupid things.

Oh, man...Don't get me started on those. If there's one thing a website could do that would make me NEVER want to visit ever again, it's contextual ads.

Upon loading, I did not get a pop up, but tribal fusion is still pulling info. After a scan, I found a piece of Adware, but it has been removed. I think it may still be on there, unless you are using that info for the advertisers.

Yeah - Tribal Fusion serves ads on NICO, but it should run in the background.

Just like Google, it will collect info, but it should be completely unnoticeable.

I'm keeping a close eye on this. Thanks Cheze!

Been downloading p0rn again haven't you Nick? Make sure you get it from a legit source so you dont get spyware, adware, etc. And firefox is safer than IE. Greg knows his internet!

Yep, it can be a problem. I use firefox, and vastly prefer it. But no system is 100%, especially on a PC.

Well then say screw Windows, and most of your vid games and visit,

http://www.ubuntu.com/ <--Great Linux Distro

or

http://www.insanelymac.com/ <--- Shows you how to install OSX on your PC.

I personally got all my favorite games to run on my OSX OS system and I don't even own an apple .

Once everyone realizes that Microsoft is the root of all Evil the internet will be a much better place.

Run firefox like hitman stated, unfortunately you will still need IE for some web apps that require active x controls. Download Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware SE Personal. Both are free for non-commercial use and do a fairly good job at finding and removing spyware/malware. Make sure you update them both after installing, no point in scanning if your definitions are old. Some spyware returns after a reboot even after being removed due to registry entries. Another good application that can help with this is Crap Cleaner. This is another freeware utility. When you run the program you will see a section called Fix Registry Issues. It is good practice to run this after you finish your Spybot and Adaware scans to remove those pesky registry lurkers.

Also, spybot has a utility contained within called something resident, cant remember off the top of my head, but it will allow you to protect your IE settings as well as notify you if your machine is trying to connect online without you knowing it.

Hope this helps a bit.

My biggest piece of advice, buy a mac. I use the Camino web browser on my mac (a Mozilla product like Firefox) that allows me to bloc banners and other ads from being rendered. Im sure that there is a plugin for firefox that will do the same thing though.

Just downloaded that Crap Cleaner, it is a powerful piece of freeware. I am pleased. It has advanced features, but I don't know if I would need them. Seriously Epokh, you gotta try it.

Well two nice things about it. It scans and only suggests entries that have some sort of issue, so fixing the issues should not affect any "legitimate" entries. Before it makes any changes it prompts you to make a bacup of the registry. I suggest doing so each and every time that you clean the registry.

Other features/observations:[Cleaner] The unistaller utility that is included is much faster than windows uninstaller. (also good practice to run registry cleaner directly after uninstalling an application)

[Cleaner] Windows Cleaning - Cover Your Tracks. You have the ability to removed all the cached temp files on your machine, cookies, browser history, URLs, download locations, auto-complete history. Nothing worse than having your mother or girlfriend hop on to look-up Fantasia on Google, only to have it auto-complete with "farm sex". pwnd!

Also, for those of you with inadequate virus protection, or those that are currently paying a monthly or yearly fee for your current virus app: Download AVG Free! Feature rich with a small footprint. I highly recommend it, use it myself.

Keywords: spyware adware removal cleaning repair windows spybot search and destroy adaware personal se virus protection virus removal virus cleaning AVG free slow computer free antivirus anti-virus anti virus pop-ups popups pop ups ads advertisments registry

EDIT: Added keywords, might be a decent thread to have searchable

Thanks, I appreciate it. I've been reading and reading for the past two years trying to learn as much as I can about my little pignose. You all have really helped me go from someone who knows nothing about cars to someone who feels comfortable doing the majority of the work on my 240. I try not to post unless I have something positive to contribute (well, excluding my post to Alec last night, but I feel it was warranted.)

You have a wonderful thing going here, 61,000+ members and growing. If you ever need a hand with anything let me know. I own a small web development (mostly database and web applications) company and manage Juniata College's web department (we have about 365k files in our web directory)

I'm forcing myself to make time this summer for the 240. There are a few projects that I need to get started (CA swap, in-dash Apple Mac Mini car computer system, TC and Shrifter for my Auto) but wife's health hasn't been the best so money and time are at a premium. I'll be sure to log the progress of each with a thread once they are underway.

If anyone wants to donate any parts/cars to the cause, feel free to send them my way! HAH!

Well, I just saw this thread last night and thought it was weird since I've never had a pop-up on NICO. Well, I just switched to Firefox about 2 days ago and it let me know at about 12:45 that I got a pop-up. Out of curiosity I went ahead and opened it and it was from Tribal Fusion, but oddly it was just a blank white page. I went looking for this thread and got another pop-up from Tribal Fusion, this time it had a NetFlix ad on it. Just thought I'd let you guys know.
