Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.
1) Go to the Georgia Power office and ask for a one month extension. Show the clerk proof of employment. Sign the papers. Done.
2) Visit the local Food Bank. They help with heating costs as well as free food.
3) Ask boss for more hours. Ask for an advance. Explain your situation. The worst he can say is no. TRY.
4) Are the sister and the mother working? If not, they need a job too. Even if it's just a part-time gig at McDonald's, that will pay the light bill.
5) Sell absolutely everything you don't need to survive. Food. Clothing. Shelter. That's it. Everything else is unnecessary. I don't care if the TV cost $4000 and they only get $400. That's a light bill. Same thing with the gaming consoles and the computer.
6) Wear a sweater and set the thermostat a little low. Turn your water heater down. Turn off lights when not in use. Wear your outer clothes an extra day to avoid greater laundry costs.
If the woman is for real, I can sympathize with her. I've slept in houses with cracks in the walls you can see daylight out of. I've slept in rooms so cold that you could see your breath out from under the covers. I've slept 10 people in a room because that was the only room we could afford to heat. I went three years without a telephone and a decade without cable. I drove a 1979 Datsun 210 with 200,000 miles on it. How did we make it? We worked together, we pooled our money, we bought the necessities, and did without the wants. That's what you do when you're poor but making it on your own.
However, if she isn't for real, she can bite me for making it harder for the people who are really in need to get the help that they deserve.
