Are ALL of the plugs out? If they are and it won't turn it's time for a new engine.

I had my fingers crossed for you but it sounds like it's done. The VH is removed w/transmission from under the car according to FSM although I bet you could do it from the top, it would just be a hell of a struggle. If you can't break it loose by hand it's probably more than just corrosion. I'm sorry this happened to you. Try anything you can to break it loose since you can't possibly hurt it anymore than it is already. Maybe you can fill it up with diesel for a couple days and try? Sounds like it's done though. JDM or replacement Q is the way to go.

As I said earlier after replacing 32 Q45 engines [all 3 shops] in 15 years statistics become useful, same with doing 100+ chain guide repairs.

Always a useful exercise to totally disassemble to learn the inner workings and to measure things to gain an understanding of the EXTREME PRECISION used to assemble them. And the racing technology used in the bottom end to allow longevity.

The Aussies and NZ are always looking for internal engine parts for their projects so possible to recover something?

Not that I don't believe your stats but for a few grand I think it's worth a shot at cracking loose especially since the attempt to save is easier than a r/r. Seems like he's done almost all he can do short of strapping a mule to it. It's a shame.

well thanks for the constructive criticism, turns out the motor is in fact, F U C K E D! I just got off the phone with JDM engine depot and they have a 92 VH45DE with 40,000k on it metal backed timing chain guides and all the bells and whistles (ie. starter alternator, manifolds, ac compressor) and a 90 day warranty and it will be shipped to my doorstep for the UNBELIEVABLE cost of 960 bucks!!!!! you guys that are payin 3 grand for one of these motors are either donald trumps hillbilly cousins or just hillbilly's. anyway thats good news. umm as far as the swap goes with these motors, it is my first rodeo. any help with the swap would be great. i looked and i dont even see any motor mounts? heard i gotta drop the motor and transmission together out the bottom? needin some help with this deal. on how to replace these bad boys. ohh im gonna try the old diesel fuel trip too! might be able to save the old motor and sell it if it free's up. anyway let me know how to do this motor deal. im in minnesota and the warmest its been all month is 28 degree's. and summers gettin close, dont wanna be puttin around in a chevy celebrity when i can be rollin in my Q.

See when life closes a window a door opens, congratulations. But you still have to put it in which isn't all that hard since a 18 year old kid did it 3 times (I forget the guy that did it).

You still need to add $1000 worth of parts to your "new" motor before even thinking of installing it- plugs, all under plenum hoses, knock sensors, idler pullys, belts, valve cover gaskets, oil pressure switch, thermostat, possibly waterpump,etc,etc.....

Without a visual inspection of new motor, it is a pure gamble of its true condition- and dont bet money on the low mile statement from the seller- they say that about EVERY old tired motor they sell, pure marketing B.S.

if im paying a grand for a motor it better have all that s h i t in it already! other wise i could just rip apart my motor and rebuild it. some other guy on this forums swore by those jdm used motors, i think i'll take my chances. why would they warranty it if they dont know if its gonna crap out or not. that would be bad marketing.

Spend some time with the "search" function on this forum- jdm or other engine swap needs are well documented.....you will learn my $1000 quote is conservative, and based on obtaining a 25% discount on all parts, and not including any labor. Forgot to mention, add replacing front and rear main oil seals before installing motor.

**************** you MUST remove front timing cover AND VISUALLY CONFIRM the chain guides have been replaced with metal backed ones....never heard of any used junkyard JDM motor already having this job completed prior to sale...........More marketing by seller?????

You can go with Qship's way, which is the right way but more expensive, labor intensive and costly way. Or you can just replace EVERYTHING you can't easily get too such as the oil seals and the chain guides and valve covers seals since its 1000 times easier with the motor out.

Everything on my list is easier{therefor cheaper} to replace while engine is on a stand VS after installation. We didnt even talk about 1992 old fuel injectors and ethanol yet either.......

Right but I am saying that those are easier when on the stand, injectors, hoses and other thing that have to do with the plenum removal are only a hour or two more max. Right now I think the guy needs a car fast. But I do defiantly agree with you, If I was in his case and money and time was no issue I too would replace everything.

We pay $950 to $1,300 delivered to our shop from our choice of 3 different import warehouses in Metro ATL. Sometimes we are forced to import from Baltimore or other places if nothing suitable is in stock or expected in. They get new MIXED containers in every 25-30 days. It depends on how urgent the owner wishes the process to begin. Then we gamble and pay freight to ATL.We usually go to warehouse and examine the available choices. This adds about 3-4 hours plus mileage to the bill.................say $400.

Then we tear into the plenum and examine the chain guides [don't trust anyone]. This process can add 10-15 hours for rehabilitation.

WE don't warranty any component that is not replaced with oem brand new. However we transfer any warranty given to us by engine supplier to car owner.

It usually means that engine supplier will replace any engine returned to them that proves defective INTERNALLY in some time period 30 days> 1 year. But it must be removed [labor] and return shipped to them and you must pay the reshipping charges again back to you for replacement.

The replacement engine in and of itself is a minor part of the process and cost.

I am concerned that you think $1000 is expensive for a JDM engine as we often pay $3,000 plus for Lexus engines of much less complexity.

Seeing as how they are over $10K new form the dealer.

How common do you think all alloy DOHC, variable intake, 4 valves per cylinder, coil on plug, forged steel crankshaft, and crank cradle reinforced engines are?

But you can buy a ENTIRE Q45 for that price, sure it won't have that many low miles, but if you would rebuild the engine to that extent you might as well get another car to keep for more parts too.

Buying another car and getting as much info on it as possible is better to me than getting another JDM VH45DE.

Paul, I agree with you 100%....why I always say "get a new Q and keep your old one as a parts feeder" when a member says they blew their engine- cheaper and quicker to just purchase a different Q- unless you have a 100% fully restored pristine low mile Q with a bad motor{ very, very rare}

T3 hasn't replaced a [90-96] Q45 engine in the past 12 months, as the [$4-4,800] [ to do the job right*] cost exceed the value to most people. We have shifted focus to Lexus which retail for $2500-$3,000 more for same year vs Q, so these owners are more likely to replace engines rather than junk cars.

Same with Nissan remanned transmissions which cost $3,000 to replace.

I am still amazed by the few [5] people who pay to replace all 8 injectors which costs $2000+.

There seems to be an invisible price point.

* For poor desparate people we suggest they find junkyards who might swap without rehabilitation and save $1,000- $1500 but at high risk.

Usually any takeout won't have been through rehab when you get it. The engine is much easier to work on when it is out of the car and this is why most reccomend verifying chain guides, doing plenum work. In my case if I were you the least I'd do is verify chain guides since if it does in fact have metal guides you just need a tube of silicone to seal it back up again after verification. If you don't you may be very unlucky, as I've heard rumor of VH45 dying very young of chain guide failure, and some, like mine, went 180k with busted guides. It's a gamble and a serious one. I agree with Q-tech, 960 for a complete motor is astounding. Any decent SBC rebuild will cost more than that after appropriate machining, etc... And the VH is all forged w/six bolt mains. His is over 300k miles. Thats where I'd like to be. Hell of an engine. Wes is the first Qer to capitalize on its potential in stock form by backing it with a 5 speed.

Back on track, the under plenum stuff can be saved for a later time if you must, but if you have the extra time and dough it is best to do it now. Ohm KS and injectors and do a visual inspection on sub-harnesses. Our fuel kills Q injectors so be constantly vigilant in maintaining a leg up on that issue. I'm doing one now as well as a host of other things I didn't do last year. Doing the plenum in car with appropriate parts waiting for reassembly will take less than a day if you're seasoned, but given the choice on the stand is always a better option. Also install an inline filter on the transmission return line and install a B&M cooler either in series or isolated from the radiator cooler to save your transmission from death. I'd hate to see all this effort and watch your transmission die right after. The cooler is 50 bucks or so and the inline filter is between 5 and 20 usually. Investing in a good bottle of LubeGuard can also go a long way for your trans. I would suggest downloading the FSM or buying one off eBay or Amazon to aid you in your quest of engine swap glory. This is also the time, again if you have the dough, to consider any performance mods you would like to take advantage of, such as stall converters, exhaust mods, blah blah. My Q is all stock, which is fine by me, but many other Qers here have installed new rear gears and converters and full exhausts with varying amounts of success and have threaded it here or I'm sure would be happy to lend advice to you.

Variable intake? Do you mean VVT? If so variable intake implies variable runners rather than valves. I assume you are talking about intake valves. Sorry to nitpick, but the intake runners on the VH are not variable. In case anyone was confused.

well first of all i'll be checking the guides to confirm andy damage or plastic, but whrre does one order the metal backed guides? thats the priority here for me, as far as the front and rear seals, we'll check those before we put the motor in. i dont wanna tear it all the way down to the pistons, just check the guides and maybe put a new converter in, if im feeling ambitious. the guy im doing this project with is ase certified and has about 30 years of seasoned experience, he's a farmer now and this is a hobby for him whereas im 21 years old and have only been doing my own car work for 6 years. i dont have a lot of money to dump on this swap just enough to get the car running on its own power, along with the chain guides if i have to. the labor, well like i said its a hobby for him and he's only charging me 200 bucks for the swap with me helping. so im gettin by pretty shabby as it is.

"verify chain guides since if it does in fact have metal guides you just need a tube of silicone to seal it back up again after verification".

We always replace the font oil seal when ever we remove cover for examination even if guides are metal since you must deform the old seal to slide the cover off.The other thing is the oil chain, they are always slack even with 100k due to short length and angles, we suggest that owner pay to replace chain, gears, and guide. Never seen them fail on metal guides but they look scarey after 100k.

But I have 221k on my second oil chain after 100K replacement.

The point is easy, fast and cheap to change when you have cover off.

Change oil seals=cheap and easy. May as well. There should be a laundry list somewhere of things to do while the engine is out. Definitely follow Qtechs advice on the oil chain and related equipment. You can get the metal-backed kit from Infiniti of Scottsdale, infinitipartsusa.com. Joe cuts us a discount over dealer prices. Many of us reccommend Joe and use Joe. I use many dealers, but alot and all of my OEM parts, such a guides came and come from Infiniti of Scottsdale. They do a straight business and Joe really cares about his reputation. Good man. Also consider belts and pulleys, though those may be done later after install in addition to under plenum.

That's the rub after 19-16 years since manufacture even very low mile Japanese engines are still old and the things attached to them are old and have been sitting uncranked [in junkyard] for the past 8-10 years. They may have been removed years ago placed in a container and shipped to US where they sit it warehouses or piled with plastic covers outside.

All the hoses are rotten inside even the ones with fresh silicone luster spray to look new. Many of the importers and exporters have special HOT SOLVENT MACHINES and spray booths to fool the average non engineer into thinking the junk is pristine. When you pull front cover and reseal valve covers you see the junk you purchased. When you reseal oil pan you see the metal and plastic. When you pull the plenum you see the real number of miles.

so i have this jdm engine depot motor. its apparently a vh45de infiniti motor but on the plenum where the infiniti logo usually is the word nissan is there instead of the infiniti logo. does anyone or has anyone heard of a vh45de with a a nissan stamp in place of the infiniti one on the plenum ever? i dont know if its the same, and if it is and its a nissan vh45de does it have all the performance stuff inside the engine? i mean the sticker thats usually on the vh45de infiniti that says the name and type and torque and horsepower thats not even there. any suggestions? is it the same motor just with a nissan plenum?

Looks like a VH to me. If it's a JDM take out, I'd assume it would say Nissan as Japan doesn't really have a distinction between Nissan and Infiniti. (At least I'm pretty sure that's the reason.)

Don't worry too much about the chain guide job. I'm 21 with a Q too. I had the chain guides done on my 92 in March of 08. I had the valve covers resealed, various hoses replaced, new spark plugs, oil chain and guides done for about $1400. It was something like $700 for parts from Joe.

You can save a ton of money doing it yourself if you know how. Following the write ups here will definitely make it a breeze. Unfortunately, I can't do anything with my car because I don't trust myself enough and if something goes wrong, I'm stranded until it's fixed. That's why I keep shelling out labor money. Hopefully those days will be over soon.

Good luck with the take out engine.

You need to spend the time reading the previous posts.

All JDM G50 were sold as Nissans. Infiniti brand only introduced to the JDM within the last couple of years.

Brian,

I'm not sure that's correct... If you check out Yahoo auctions in Japan, you will find a ton of older G50s badged as Infiniti... I think it was called the Nissan Infiniti Q45.
