Hello, lately I have been noticing some rattling noise at low rpm's.. (it stops rattling at about 2500rpms.only under load, I guess... it has been doing this for about a week or so) My friend tells me its detination.. I told him that detination is really loud (at least that's what I hear). He thinks my timing is off and it's causing it.. I searched about it but didn't really find the answers i needed. Pinging can come from bad gas, right? I am guilty of using 87 gas., the crappy kind. Please help, I don't want my engine to break down.

no, i removed those guides when I rebuilt it. It is coming from the motor, sounds like right where the shifter is but I know it's not the transmission. It only happens under load and it goes away at a certain rpm. me being an idiot, I never put a timing light to my car cause it ran fine after i got it running.. i just put the dizzy back in and lined the bolts up with the marks i made and it ran fine so i didn't bother. I might have to go buy a timing light.

hmmm, I know sometimes my lifters will make noise for a week or so after some hard driving or what not.

if the noise is coming from the engine and if you hear it below the motor near the transmission, it could be those damn rod bearings. i had a ka24de that did the same thing and 2 months later the whole engine went. And OHH yeah, the ka24de can run higher gas octane than 87, so that could be just your problem.

well, I said I rebuilt the motor so the bearings are brand new. Maybe I'll just try to run premium gas in there, not the cheapest stuff.

oh, well another thing i forgot to mention is the fact that I don't have a knock sensor in.. i took it off... would that cause my car to run crappy? Also I went to the parts store and got a timing light... I used it and saw that my timing was way way off... to the right of 20btdc about 1 inch.. so I retarded it, i think.. to where it was sitting on the last white dot (the dot lines up with the thing that's poking out) that's 20degrees btdc right? It still makes the noise a little bit, not as much as it did before though.. i think my plugs are bad.

Update: I drove around today with the shift boot and the rubbber part that fits over the shifter off so that I could hear the rattling noise better. The sound happens at lower rpms, anywhere from 1k-3.5k... it happens when I accelerate and deccelerate... It sounds like rocks and sand rolling around....my engine runs perfectly, I have 93 octane in it and the timing is 20-22degrees btdc. I guess the only thing I can do now is put the car on jackstands and have a friend switch gears or just rev it and listen for the noise. Ooooh I can't wait to find out what it is.. it's so annoying! When I rev the engine and listen in the engine bay, I can barely hear it.. it's coming from underneat the car close to the transmission .. I suspect the catalytic converter...almost like there are rocks and sand inside it jumping around ... the guy before me may have gutted the cat... I can't take it off to see cause the dumb *** welded it all together anyway... does ping occur on decceleration? If not, then detonation isn't the issue. Can I get some of your opinions?

you're right, it's a possibility.. but it runs good, it's just the noise.. I'll get underneath it and find out what it was and i'll let you know.

ok... I got the car up on jackstands and I inspected.. It seems as though there are pieces of the catalytic converter bouncing around in the exhaust...they could be in the heat shield too..ugh, guess i'm going to have to live with it ... I have a complete rs*r 3'' exhaust from my Sr20 .. I wonder how easy of a time the muffler shop would have putting that on... they would have to fabricate an adapter piece to fit on the ka exhaust elbow (where the O2 sensor is) wonder how much that would cost? any idea?

A messed up cat will rob you of power. It can even make your car stop running. Now is a good time to get a high flow cat.

yea I'd like to find one... I can't put one in the exhaust setup i have now because it's all welded together.. the guy before me did it... i have no idea why.in my 3'' exhaust, I have a straight pipe that goes where the cat would.. I will probably get one that will fit the sr20 exhaust. I had a cavalier that i gutted the cat out of, I remember noticing a big difference... I have no idea if the cat is already gutted.

Is its a rattle or it sounds like a rattle. Did you put your hand on the converter (cold of couse) and feel it moving? I had a grand am when it went bad it was a terrible rattle type noise but it was just bad, nothing moving around.

Check your MAF if it doesnt want to rev, or maybe a bearing. Unplug your battery and try to turn it over by hand and tell us how hard it is.

Check your EGR valve, it could be stuck open.
