Hey, I guess i'll just see if you guys can help me.. I know I have to go troubleshoot it.. thank god it's warm and sunny outside today. My ECU is giving me 3 codes.. knock sensor, or course.. ignition signal and vehicle speed sensor. The Car will idle normally, like there's nothing wrong with it, I give the car a little gas and it boggs... this is exactly what it sounds like...ok, imagine there's this little dog and he's got his toy/bone, whatever.. and you're trying to steal it from him.. you know that growl they do underneath their breath? I think that the rattling noise is somehow connected with this.. I thought of one thing... clogged cat... I have a boost gauge in my tool box that i'm going to hook up.. i read somewhere that if you rev it up and the vaccum drops then it is most likely an exhaust restriction.. I was leaving my sister's work and I got on the bypass and kinda got on it.. the next exit was mine..I had only gone about 1 mile.. I noticed that my engine sounded like it was working hard (the intake growl was still there and I wasn't even pushing it hard) The power slowly sloped off...right as I was getting off of the exit... I steered it to the side of the road and drove it till I got off the exit.. I was only going about 10mph... it would let me drive a little ways and then it woudl start to die.. I had to let the clutch out for a sec and then start driving again... strange. I thought it could be my speed sensor going nuts.... I guess i'm going to go out there and look at it. By the way, I put brand new bearings in the motor in November. Does anyone know how a cat clogs itself up? I have seen the insides.. it looks like a honeycomb. On my cat there's this rod thats coming off of the side of it... what IS that?

oh and i don't have EGR anymore... i took it off ...

omg... I went outside and just looked at the no.1 spark plug... looked a little like I was running rich cause it had a bit of carbon build up... I put the p lug back in and started her up.. I touched on the gas some and it ws the same.. I got out of the car quickly and put my hand in front of the exhaust tips and I felt nothing ... there was a tiny bit of air coming out but I think it's completely blocked up!! AHH what in teh world happened in my exhaust piping...?!@?!? looks like if i am going to be going anywhere i'm not going anywhere with exhaust on.. time to bust out the 3 inch.

hahah... I remember when I first got it in the car and got it running... it sounded like some v8... lol.. just the mani on.. no exhaust..I'm about to use my sisters car and go to a muffler shop and ask them what they can do and how much it might cost. I would love to see what the clog is about.

You are too funny.

Cats fail and clog up, it's not unussual. In fact it is quite common. The rattling you are hearing is likely pieces of the honey comb broken up.

The pipe on the side is where air comes in to help the cat work. By the way, the old honey comb style cats are very restrictive so at least get a high flow replacement.

Yea I want to be kind to mother nature and get a high flow cat at least.Right now it looks like i'm going to have to get the car up on jackstands in the parking lot and remove this exhaust.. i will probably try to find a high flow for the sr20 exhaust.. what i'm going to put on there. Dang, I just wonder what it would feel like If I had a high flow cat.. probably more response. I can visualize what is going on inside there cause I have seen inside a cat. before. I guess the pieces have turned sideways or soemthing and it's blocking it up pretty badly.

no, just never put it back on.. it was throwing a code anyway and the harness was fine. .. when I find one... i'll probably be able to squeeze my little hand in there and put it back on without having to take the intake manifold off... god what a nightmare. I have already done it 5 or 6 times and I hope I never have to do it again as long as I have that motor in there. Someone said that if you remove the oil filter, you could do it if you had small paws?
