Last weekend I picked up the engine Im going to be using for my KA-T, a beautiful 1997 with 85k on her. My friends and I grabbed it and tore it down all in one night- I swear we couldnt get enough. Man, I can go on and on about how awesome it was to finally get my hands dirty on this engine, but I'll let the pics speak for themselves:

(there will be a few posts of pics so Ill letcha know when I'm done)

In case you were wondering, YES a KA+transmission DOES FIT in the back of a 1992 Saturn SL statonwagon! haha and thats my friend Will lookin goofy.

despite the late hour and all the beer being consumed, we managed to do things right this time- everything was bagged seperately and labeled, ready to be put back together when the time is right.

next was to take the valve cover off and get a look at the cams, etc... but one of those middle bolts was bein a real biznitch. I basically stripped the hell outta it till it was unrecgonizable, so we cut it off with the handy dandy dremel!

ooohhhh cams still have paint on them...

on a sidenote, a friend of mine is preparing for a SOHC to DOHC swap very soon, he's even on the boards (only like 2 posts though I think, he'd be the Super Ninja and the third member of the Super Rad trifecta) he's getting a one with 59k on it along with 5 speed transmission and wiring harness for 1200, good deal or bad deal?

behind the flywheel- the end of the crank I guess? There is a lot of weird gunky stuff in there, you can see it on the bottom right portion of the hole there. Is that normal?

That gunky stuff is clutch dust/ road grime caught by a small oil seep. Perfectly normal, though we all like to believe our engines never seep oil. :)

BTW, don't track that stuff into the house! Stains any and everything real good.

very very bad deal I'd say. 59k miles is impressive for a KA, but I dont think I'd feel right paying $1200 for ANY KA except MAAAAYBE a new one. Even so, this one that I got for $200 is pretty damn clean and its got 85k on it!

I'm thinking of ordering a KA from the dealer, my buddy is a Nissan Corperate guy, so I'm gonna try to get a hookup :D

Nice dude, me and a buddy did roughly the same thing a month ago...similar '97 KA, autotrans though (I already have a 5 spd), replace 85k mi with 110K, and $200 for $150, and we used mercury villager (nissan quest) to haul it versus a satyrn.Question for ya though: I don't know if you have got to the timing chain yet, but when ya do lemme know if you have upper chain guards. Cause I don't, I'm not sure if I even need em, but Im just checkin whether nissan or the previous owner left em off.

dont need em bro. your chain slacks over time, and it just hits those guides and makes an irritating ticking noise. everyone pulls them off if theyre still there. dont worry about it
