I'm an avid fan of safety and observe all sorts of trends. I extracted this article that is just a short blurb from a leading tire expert at MTD (Modern Tire Dealer). Personally, I don't like the trend nor look of tire stretching; rolling the fenders is the correct way to make a tire/wheel combo look great. I'm not pointing fingers or flaming anyone here. I owned and ran 2 performance shops in the past and managed a NIRA/IDRC dragrace team ... In that, I just see way too many people pushing the safety barrier on the streets with just who can have the lowest car, furthest stretched out tires and most negative camber. It really should just be left to the pro-drifter (hence track car). Just FYI ...
Quote »The trend of "tire stretching" [is] where people are stretching a narrower tire over a wider wheel, making the sidewalls stretch outward to hit the wheel lip.
How is the bead seated? By igniting the tire after it's been filled with brake cleaner or ethanol or propane or God knows what else. ... Why would someone want to stretch a tire? For the look. When they want to run a wide tire and not have it rub the fender.
What they're doing is taking a precision-built, highly engineered product and warping it out of recognition. Forget safety, tire longevity. It's the latest must-have tire trend.
